Hey guys,
i was called to do a PC trouble shooting house call tonight. The client couldn't connect to the internet with their laptop.
They are using Verizon DSL as their service. I'm not very familiar with setting up DSL connections. I've done cable modem connections and that's easy as pie. All you do is connect the wires and setup TCP/IP and it'll acquire a network address automatically.
As far as I know with DSL, you need to login with a username and password, am I right? I was not able to acquire a IP address automatically. I know if you have the DSL modem hooked up to a router, you login to the router through HTTP and enter the login/password there. But if you do not have a router, how does it work?
Do you login to the DSL modem and then enter the name/pw? Or do you do that elsewhere?
BTW, the laptop i'm troubleshooting uses Windows 98. I know Windows XP has an internet connection wizard which sets up PPoE and you can enter the login/pw there. But... on Windows 98, how does that work?
The laptop's CDROM drive wasn't working (couldn't read CDs at all), so i couldn't use the CD that came with the modem to help me setup.
thanks in advance for the help guys
EDIT: WHOOPS... i posted this here, my bad... I posted this in networking now so I guess sorry for double post.
