Setting up a static IP for a computer on a network?

Ok I have a cable modem. This cable modem has a static IP. I connect it to my server pc and then share the internet access with other computers, one of which is my own.

I run WinXP...

My problem is how do I make my computer always have the same "fake" ip adress, right now it wants to change it every other week. When I had win2000 and win98 I never had a problem with this (I think).

On my host PC I have two network cards. The one connected to my cable modem I have set to auto dns and auto ip config (needed for my cable connection).

On the other nic I have the "use the following IP address" selected.
For the IP address I have 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Default gateway blank

On my client (me) computer I had it set to auto ip config and I used ics to share the internet with the host pc.

when I tried to set the "use the following IP address"
For the IP address I have 192.168.0.2
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Default gateway 92.168.0.1....I also tried leaving it blank

When I did this I could not access the internet anymore...I still could access the Local area Network.

Is it possible to make it so I can keep the same dummy ip address. Otherwise I have to keep updating the port forwarding info on the host pc. This is not hard to do, but i rather set it and forget it.

I don't have XP, but it sounds like on your server you need to specify the NIC that is connected to your cable modem to forward IP traffic. Otherwise it will behave as an entirely separate network, since in effect you are creating a firewall (in the sense that you have internet and internal traffic on two different subnets). If this is what you are looking to do but don't want to sacrifice the security of the server might I suggest a small router/firewall? Linksys makes some pretty decent ones that can be had for $100 (I have a combo router/firewall/WAP and it has worked out great). Otherwise I think you need to do some tinkering with the settings on the server.

hmm the whole point of my server computer is to share the internet and printer with the other computers...

Is there a setting to "specify the NIC that is connected to your cable modem to forward IP traffic" that I am missing?

I do not see an option to make that nic to forward ip traffic...

I do have Internet Connection Sharing check...
---Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection

I would love to get one of those Linksys router things...but if I can save some money and use an old computer I wanted to give that a shot. :p

I guess what I am looking for is maybe someone that has gone though the same thing and they can describe what settings to make that would allow this to work.

I have never used the Internet Sharing service, but from what I've heard it isn't always reliable. Also, is it possible that the service assumes you are using one NIC and sharing the same IP range throughout your network? I'm just guessing here, so don't quote me on this.
As far as setting your NIC to forward IP traffic, I was looking on my 2000 machine for that setting and couldn't find it just now. (I'm not sure how similar XP is, I haven't seen it yet). Are you saying this was working in this configuration until you installed XP? If that is the case then I would have to bow to someone who has used XP and knows exactly how the Internet Sharing service does what it does. However as one more thing to try on the server's second (internal) NIC you could try setting the gateway to the address of the cable modem NIC.

I think you have to have two nics for it to work.

I say I think that it worked before...
I have been running this type of network for about 2 years now...with win2000. I never had this problem before.

The only problem is that I have to open certain ports and forward them to my computer. Such as ICQ.

I should be able to just put my computer name in there instead of the ip...but for some reason that does not want to work...but if I put the current dummy ip of my machine in there it works fine.

As for

<< try on the server's second (internal) NIC you could try setting the gateway to the address of the cable modem NIC >>

Do I put in my real ip there?

I assume that the nic connected to the cable modem uses the real ip..
the second nic I see uses 192.168.0.1 with a blank gateway...

I think I am getting really lost here as to what's going on with your setup, so is there anyone else who could lend a hand? Sorry if I've confused more than I've helped.
