Setting up a small network with file server -- questions

I have installed network hardware for several small businesses and configured siimple peer-to-peer networks for homes and businesses. My only exposure to Microsoft Server platforms is in the web server arena. I've never configured a true workstation - file server network.

I am currently upgrading the network in a small law office. I've upgraded all the workstations (running Windows98) and installed DSL and a router for Internet access. The office's current setup is an ancient Netware configuration. The only function of the current server is to provide a central storage location for the firm's files and to control user access (which is wide open, with no passwords). Their desire is simply to increase speed and implement a backup system. Cost is a primary concern.

I am building them a server using stable parts, with a cheap raid array and a backup system. I then plan to migrate their files from the existing server -- which are almost exclusively Word Processing files. Now to my question:

Money being a primary consideration and given their network's very basic setup, could I simply use Windows XP (or 2000) Professional on the "file server." In other words, given the very basic requirements of file storage and user level access to the server, is there any real beneif to dropping $700 bucks on 2000 Server. Would the Professional version suffice in this case?

Thanks in advance. Any suggestions appreciated.

I would use 2k pro rather than XP pro, I like the interface better, plus Ive used it longer and have a better feel for it than XP.
If no more than 10 connects at the same time, I think you could use it, hope someone else can confirm
What type of clients will be connecting?

Sounds like I'll go with Win 2k pro. I'm more familiar with 2k pro anyway. The only "clients" are essentially two secretaries and two attorneys who store "case files" on shared drives on the server. The client computers are all running Windows98.

Thanks for the info. Gotta love that Win 2k Pro full version (OEM) is available at Newegg for $140 with a hardware purchase.
