i have built a p4 1.8 as my server for my house. im not to familiar with setting them up though. at school we log in on Win2k machines and have a set size hard drive and certain resources. i think this is done through active directories am i right? anyhow to make a long post short i want my parents computer to log in to my server for a custom setup I.E apps & hd space how do i go about doing this. and can i set up a network between 2 houses over DSL. like can my girlfriend occasionally log in to my server and use my apps and etc.

P.s what OS the destops have XP pro

I think the best solution for you would be to buy a cable/dsl router. I like Linksys, and set that up to share the internet. As for a server do you have a reason you want to log into a domain, or even create one for that matter. Seems like a lot of work for a little home network. Now setting up a file server is a different story and is not all that hard.

From reading your post, seems like you want to set up a file server. A linux OS would be best for that, after reading some posts on the Networking forum. Someone over there also wanted to set up a file server. You can probably set up a FTP server for your girlfriend to log in to share files. Like kyle said, a router would be the best way to go if you have more than one computer in your house. You can still set up servers behind the router, just remember to forward the correct ports. Hope this helps.

Setting up a domain in 2k, XP involves a registration process with MS and all that crap. I suggest you go with Linux or NT4.0.
