setting up a rental long-distance?

I want to find a place to rent in portland OR, and I live in california. What's your advice about looking for rentals far from where you currently live?

It's not THAT far away. Just book a flight for one weekend ($250 from the Bay Area) and drive around to find apartments. It also helps to at least have a general area of where you want to live and a couple random apartments that you want to check out. I personally don't trust pictures to tell me how nice a place is.
