Setting up a proxy...

Hi guys, I am at summer classes this year and am staying on campus. As you all know the college network blocks almost all connections other than IE. I am trying to play City of Heroes but it can not connect to the update server.

My question is: Am I able to set up a proxy server at my house and then route my college connection through there to connect to the game? I have heard it has been done before but I really have limited knowledge of doing this. Can anyone help me out setting it up, specificly on my home computer, what software, settings, etc to use?

Thanks for the help guys!

If they are using a port filtering firewall, you might be able to get access to your proxy by changing its listening port to 80. However, if its an application aware firewall, such as a Sidewinder of Checkpoint, it will notice that you're sending non-web traffic through and kill it.

Then, you have the issues of increased latency bouncing your traffic to your home box. Games are really iffy about responce times.

Oh, and don't forget to lock down the proxy with some kind of authorization or source-IP limiting. Otherwise, every porn spammer on earth will use it to relay their junk.

Just my 5 cents, don't do it. If the sysadmins catch you, there's a good chance you'll loose your net privlidges. Besides, college is for beer, parties, and waking up in pools of your own filth. Leave the games for when you're working. 🙂

College may be all about those various things, but gaming should make it's appearance in there somehwere. We must stroke the geek in all of us.

That's why there are dorms. You can probably find plenty of porn, mp3s, and gaming right there where you live. Hmmm, grab Jenna_jamison_40yo_and_still_sucking.avi through a 100mbit connection, or should I go with the 5kb/s?

Setup a local game server. The pings will be great, the speed will be fine, and maybe, just maybe you'll meet some of the people there are school. You know, the people you're near 24hr/day. 😉
