Ok, I have 98se and NT4.0 and Win2K Pro.

I want my smallest PC to be the gateway...HP Brio 433 cel,64 mb,4gb...ect..

I have a 8 port hub and 4 other PCs...so far no problems.

Right now I use 98se and ICS on my host,
but I want to leave my internal DSL modem at home when I go to lan parties...
so I want to put it in my HP Brio that nobody is useing.

OK...now, should I use NT and Proxy server (I have Back Office 4.5)
or will 98se on the Brio be enuf...not much security...I know.

Or is there a better way with W2KPro?

Any help or suggestions would be great here guys....

If you just want to share the internet connection, then win2k pro has ICS too. It's nice and simple to setup.

Hmmm, is W2Ks ICS better than 98se..?

I must remember that I only have 64mb in this...

Would it be worth it to use 2K and get more ram??

Thx,,

I've never used win98se's ICS so I can't compare. Win2k will run on your machine with only 64megs of ram. It might be slow but all you're basically using it for is for ICS and it'll do that just fine. Win2k is a bit more secure than win98.

Thx guys...I am using W2K right now and only using the ICS and it works great!!

Now I wonder if installing Proxy server 2.0 would be a good thing or a hassel....

Any thoughts??

Proxy will probably be more of a hassle. Proxy is really geared towards big corporations in where the caching will definately help conserve bandwidth. Also with proxy you have to install a proxy client for everyone and you'll have to setup the Local address tables. I really dont see any benefits in your network to install a proxy, but hey if you have nothing to do and willing to play around with it be my guest =). Oh yeah for you to enable caching with proxy you'll need an ntfs partition. well hope that helps.

Another good tip...hmmm

I do have the HP setup with NTFS, single 4gb partition. I figured it may be a bit more secure.

But I do need to get a firewall setup on it.

But you have answered my question well, too much of a hassel for my needs.

Unless I need to set this up at work or need to learn more about it, not worth it.

Thx for your input

I use Caldera Linux and Squid for all my proxy needs...which is a total of 2 computers :)

If you want to learn more about Squid (it's amazing and free, of course!) try:

www.squid-cache.org

It's has more features than you'll ever need, most likely, but it impresses the heck out of a lot of people (sometimes, and they're usually geeks :) )
