Built him a HTPC but there isn't a jack around to hook up his internet, he doesn't want to drill holes or run cable along his wall. I have seen those gizmos that turn a regular outlet into a phone jack, are these any good? I'm deciding between that and just getting his a wireless router and having the router + dsl modem upstairs and the PC downstairs with a USB adapter. He's NOT a computer guy (at all) so any problems with the Wireless will result in him calling him. If these outlet to jack devices work without issues it might be a safer way to go.

Sometimes they work. They work for me, but with limited bandwidth. There is also phoneline networking that uses your phone wiring.

I would recommend a good wireless N router and a PCIe wireless N card for the desktop. Might be a little bit of an investment but it should be cheaper than wiring.

Depending on the wall, you only need make a hole about 1" or so (or more if you decide to put in a plastic or metal gem box) .. This will be covered by the wall plate in any case, so it will not show after the work is done. A proper tech, can fish the wires without the need for extra
holes, other than for the plate.

I totally agree. There is not 1 time that I had to make extra holes. As far as cost...I would rather run cable than take a chance with wireless. But that is just me.

his house is 1 story, I don't have a whole lot of experince running wire, none in house without an attic. I think that would be too much of an undertaking for me lol. I went ahead and ordered him a wireless router. He won't be on the internet much any ways (I hope)

bruceb you brought up fishing the wire, from where? his room is not connected to the room with the phone jack. I'm not well versed on how homes are pre-wired. What you say does make sense but I'm trying to picture if my abilities would even work if I tried this lol.
