In exchange for a download, I agreed to look into finding out how. So now I need to know how to set up a
ftp server on the persons computer. He's got dsl and wants people to be able to download from him via ftp.
The os is win xp. Any suggestions or links much appreciated. Thanks.

I wouldn't use IIS for anything, even FTP, unless you're not concerned with the box's security. IIS is the worse written program in existance for security issues (well maybe older versions of sendmail would rival it...).

I would just grab a copy of something like War-FTP or Serv-U if I was forced to serve from Windows.

I agree with Thinman, some *NIX would be better IMO, but if he must use windows, grab one of the free daemons out there.

WarFTPd is good, never used Serv-u.

Thanks for the replies. :)

Actually security doesn't matter at all here. Even after getting a couple viruses, I can't convince this guy to get a firewall.
So I guess the goal is very easy to set up with very low maintanence.

You may have to forward some of the ports if you are behind a router. The default for ftp is 21.

People like your friend are the reason things like nimda spread so fast and easily. He should have his 'net connection revoked.

I wish using the 'net required you pass a test first...

If you're friend is not behind a firewall then as nothinman suggested serv-u ftp should suffice ...
