I've seen other members in here with their own forums. I was thinking about starting one for the community I live in. Forum topics would (hopefully) be things that concerned the community, news, school news, etc.

1. How difficult is it to do something like that?
2. How much would something like that cost? (hosting fees, software, etc.)
3. Anyone know of examples to look at to see if it's even worth the bother?
4. Any other advice on things I haven't thought of yet?

Thanks!

1. Easy
2. Bandwidth depends on size. Software is free. Hosting plan for a small community (100 members or so) would be ideal with 500mb-1gb HD and 5gb-10gb bandwidth.
3. http://forums.apartment808.com,, http://forums.planethzl.com, http://yagt.org
4. Feel free to ask me any questions via PM.

yeah, it is easy and cheap. I set up Invision Power Board which is free. You have to find a webhost that has PHP and mySQL though (I use www.dathorn.com).

http://www.yagt.org was put together in a few hours.

Hosted at http://www.addaction.net as an addon domain to my conjur.com. I'm on The Plan (500MB storage, 10GB transfers) for $6.95/mo. with the 1st 6 mos. having been free.

To install the forum software was one click and then a few hours to setup the categories/forums and user access, upload skins, find emoticons and upload them.

1) Easy if you can follow instructions
2) Depends on the webhost and what forum software
3) I'd post mine, but I don't want the ATOT effect happening ;)
4) Take your time, find some skins and some hacks, pretty it up. If your good with code. You can edit everythig to remove all unnecessary features

Setting up a forum is easy and fast. You can spend a lot of time customizing the forums, creating different styles, and adding modifications though. Getting people to visit your site and to actually register and post messages is the difficult part in creating a lively online community.
