Setting up a DHCP server for a LAN party

I posted a question about a week back about setting up a server for a LAN party and people told me to make a static IP for the server and set the server up to do DHCP. How do I set up a Win2k Pro box to do DHCP? What info needs to go into the clients so they can get IPs from the server?
thanks,
-doug

For a simple LAN Party just use static ip's--as long as they are in the same subnet. DHCP is only available in server(2K, NT 4.0). Or just let the hub/switch kick out ip's.

Not exactly. If you set up ICS in Windows 2000/XP Professional, it will force you to use DHCP from the computer with the ICS to supply IPs to the other systems. :|

hmmm
i've always like WinRoute from TinySoftware . If you have net access at the lan then winroute will provide all the routing for you. Also winroute has a very good dhcp option. it's easy to configure and works like a charm. might wanna take a look =)

If you use ICS, all you ahve to do is set the comps to obtain an IP address automatically. ICS does the rest. Just setup the internet connection on the server for whatever type of access you are using, then set the other NIC and all the other comps for DHCP.

Can I still use ICS if Im not going to have an internet connection? Im planning on using a 16 port Linksys switch. Can that do DHCP? Im really looking for a step by step set of directions of anyone can provide me with some. We have had 2 LAN parties and we always waste tons of time trying to get everything up and running.
thanks,

I've never tried it, but as long as you have ICS configured it will still give out IP's. I think you would be better off just giving everyone static IPs. It will only require one reboot and you won't have to mess around with ICS. Just start at 10.1.1.1 and go to 10.1.1.x. This will work just fine.
