Ok, I'm sure this questions has been answered before by my search of the past networking topics turned up no fruit, so here is my situation...

I just bought a netgear MR814 4-port wireless 802.11b router. I got this at the same time as buying my fiance a new IBM thinkpad with a d-link wireless card. Before you go off I am perfectly happy with only 11mbs because all we do on the network will be to trade mp3's ocasionally.
Anyway, speaking of files... I got the new laptop working just fine on the wireless network (man, sitting on the john and surfing the web is wonderful :) ) She has an old gateway laptop running win98. I need to share her old files so I can copy them to the new one. I enabled file sharing under 98 and installed all the protocolls but I still can't see the old comp from the new one. Now I know that you can't access a NTFS comp from a FAT32 as is the case here, but in the past I have had no problems going the other way, so I don't think that is the problem. We are both in the same workgroup (named "Home", gotta love the originality).
Ok, so thats the problem. I would love any advice on how to get these two talking. It can even be a temp solution like somehow patching the two directly together but I have no experiance in that arena. Anyway, thanks for taking the time to read this,

That's not true - SMB doesn't care about filesystems... that's sort of like saying you can't get files off a Linux HTTP Server on a WIndows box.

You can ping the other machine, correct? If so, connect to the other's share by using a UNC path (\\ComputerName\ShareName). That should do it if filesharing is enabled. Make sure to have matching accounts and passwords before you try to do this.

Hope this helps.

I can't even ping the other comp on the same router. I used the router address (192.168.x.x) to get the old computer but no luck. They both have client for ms network enabled, is that the wrong choice? This does not make any sense to me as both are hooked to the same router and both can access the web, just they can't talk to each-other. Anyway, thanks for the advice
