setting higher core on 8800gt

an individual on another forum i visited said this:

"I haven't touched memory on my evga 8800gt, that's OCed too, but core is on 705 now, no probs. I didn't have time to play with OCing the card, just set higher core and it worked. Although, Though, my GPU is WC."

i dont know anything about overclocking so i'm just looking for feedback

what overclocking program (if there is one) would you recommend. I'd like to try messing around with on on an older 5 year computer i have to get the feel of whats going on.

much obliged.

On my old computer I used a program called PowerStrip. A lot of people like RivaTuner, which is what I'm using now. (At this point, I'm not using it to overclock, just to manage the fan speed on my 8800GT. It was also helpful for verifying that the card I bought was running at the speeds the manufacturer claimed.)

Both programs are free.

I don't know why that individual said he wasn't overclocking, because he is. Any time you increase one or more of the clock rates on the card, you're overclocking. He may have meant that he didn't have time to really get into tweaking the card, he just bumped the core speed.

RivaTuner is available here: http://www.guru3d.com/index.php?page=rivatuner

There should be some tutorials for overclocking using RivaTuner on that site. If not, google should provide plenty.

rivatuner

dont fry your card!!!! theres 4 aspects to that 8800gt that you can change ( on a basic level )
defaults: goals:
1. fan speed 29% 80-100%
2. core clock speed 600mhz 700mhz
3. shader clock speed 1500mhz 1700mhz
4. memory clock speed 900mhz 940mhz

method: rivatuner
url: guru3d.com

Read up on it before you try though.

What he did IS overclocking, FYI.

Use RivaTuner, like others have said, read up on some tutorials on how to change fan speed so your temps are good, and consider getting an aftermarket cooler like an Accelero S1 if temps are a problem even after fan speed adjustment.
