I have 0 experience setting up DSL, and about the same amount dealing with netgear routers. From what I understand, all I need to do is plug the DSL modem into the router, set it to use PPOE, give it the username and password, and thats it, it'll pretty much set itself up the rest of the way.

If I was in front of the thing, I could probably figure out how to do that no sweat. Problem is, the setup in question is roughly 100 miles from me, so I'd like to be able to walk someone over the phone how to do this. Could someone give me a quick rundown as to how to enable PPOE in a netgear router?

in my diretions:
i assume you are using windows with internet explorer.
i assume you are using win 2000 or XP, but you dont have to be. Some icons will have different names depending on which version of windows you are using.

PPOE as you know requires a a username and password to login into the DSL network (your ISP).

So, either the modem calls the ISP and gives the UID and PASS, or the ROUTER does.

If the modem does this, you can config it to do so. Attach the modem to computer via CAT5 or USB, If using USB, install drivers as well, so that the computer can see and undersatnd the modem. open internet Explorer. in the URL Address field, type in
192.168.0.1
or 192.168.1.1
which ever one werks.
consult modem manual if both fail.

you will be asked for a UID and PASS to enter the config screen of the modem. The user name is usually blank and the password is "admin". or the other way around. Consult the modem manual for default password to use.

After you login, tell the modem to use PPOE and give it UID and PASS. save config, then restart modem by unplugging. wait 30 seconds, then plus back in. You will see the LED's flash and either flash or stay lit, consult manual for status light meanings.

Now if you want to attach a router to the modem, and use still HAVE to use the modem to have the UID and PASS, then follow the instructions above. After save the config, you must attach the modem to the phole line, then atach a CAT5 patch cable beteen the modem and router. Attach the computers to the router. Turn off all computers attached to router, pull power wire out of router and modem. Wait 1 minute. Plug in modem... wait 3 minutes or untill the activity lights are saying "OK", then plug in router, wait 2 mins, then turn on computer one at a time.
WAit for computers to fully load the desktop and all processes and programs . Then launch Internet explorer.

try google.com

if success then YAY!

if page not found,
turn off computer, turn off modem and router. turn each one back on as instructed above in order, turn suspect somputer back on, try gogle.com
if it doesnt werk then:

click TOOLS at the top of IE, select INTERNET OPTIONS.

Click the CONNECTIONS TAB.

click LAN SETTINGS, place a mark into the box next to
AUTO DETECT SETTINGS. click OK.
Back on the Connections TAB, choose setup.

use the wizard to try to make internet werk, when asked if you awnt to create an email account, select NO for now.

Remember , you are connectiung to a home or office network, you are NOT connecting directly to the internet.
And NOT using VPN.
So choose, Connect to internet so i can read email and use web.
choose Setup connection manaully.
selct if you are using ALWAYS ON or PPOE.
we want ALWAYS ON. If you choose PPOE, it will assume your modem is an internal pci modem.

Reboot machine and try google.com aagain.
if success than YAY!
if not, then do this next step.

if page not found,
turn off computer, turn off modem and router. turn each one back on as instructed above in order, turn suspect somputer back on, try gogle.com

if still not werking:

open control panel
choose network and internet connections.
right click on your NIC cards icon, choose properties.
scroll down the list of protocols and such, right click TCP/IP and choose PROPERTIES.

make sure the radio buttons (bubbleButtons) are selected on both options to OBTAIN AUTOMATICALLY.

choose ok on all menus.

reboot if it says to do so.

try google.com.

if werks then good, if not then:
if page not found,
turn off computer, turn off modem and router. turn each one back on as instructed above in order, turn suspect somputer back on, try gogle.com
...

if it still doesnt werk, then i suggest you :
if page not found,
turn off computer, turn off modem and router. turn each one back on as instructed above in order, turn suspect somputer back on, try gogle.com

if it still doesnt werk, then open a command window
(Start>RUN>command)
or
(start>run>cmd)
at the prompt, type in
ipconfig /all
[ipconfig(space)/all]
slam enter

here, you will see your internet stuff.

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>

the thing to check for is the first thing:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix
make sure it says something there in relation to your modem or ISP name.
Also make sure your IP address of the computer starts with the same octets as your router's IP address
my machine's ip is :

192.168.0.101

my router's ip address is :
192.168.0.1

If your ip address is a 172 or something, then you need to try these steps again from the begining.
or call your isp
or use the CD that came with the modem and DSL service.

Also make sure the NIC card is installed properly. Hold down the Windows Key on the KeyBoard, while holding down, hit PAUSE key on top right of keyboard. A menu will show showing RAM dn Cpur speed and Windows version and such. click the tabs untill you see a button saying "DEVICE MANAGER" or semthing similar.

click the lil PLUS symbol to expand teh stuff under NETWORK ADAPTERS.
Make sure your NIC card is listed there.
if it is not, then you wil probably see the card with a yellow exclamation! point next to an unknown device. Right click that unknown device and choose properties, choose update driver. pop in driver cd and use the wizrd to scan cdrom drive and windows update for driver.

reboot and try google.

If your NIC card IS listed under NETWORK CONNECTIONS, then right click it and choose properties. IT should say "this devise is werking properly". if not, then ...uhhh... you will figure it out.

fix problem, reboot and try google.com again.

that is all the help i can really give yah, i hope it werks.

contact ISP and have them diagnose your Phoneline for connection status and to see if they can see anything wrong.
if that still doesnt werk, post in here agin and hope someone replys.

last resort, install XP Pro fresh and make sure CAT5 is in NIC card while install.
(i probably left a step out or something...sorry if i did.

i hope this works.
