I've not posted for the last several days waiting for something really special to create my 10,000th post and become a LIFER!

This event seems to fit the bill just right. 😛 😀

Welcome to Team AnandTech SETI!

Our Seti-Classic TeAm is now 3,256 members strong! 😀

Our Seti-Boinc TeAm now has 121 producing members! 😀

I would like to introduce our newest member:

Seti-Classic

TeAm_BnT ---- Rank 5 New ---- 201,008 Wus :sun: ---- Mentor: Smoke
Here is your Personal Stats Machine

Your mentor may not be able to contact you if you don?t have PMs enabled (Allow Private Messages) ? you can do that in your profile.

We hope you drop by often and say hello.

WARNING:

SETI WUs contain hidden rewards, and prolonged crunching can be addictive. TeAm members should guard against excessive computer building, parts hording, and stat checking. <Quote of recent new member, Pokey> 😛 😀

SETI - CLASSIC

How to run SETI-Classic and Join TeAm AnandTech

How To configure your SetiDriver for SETI - CLASSIC to use a TeAm SetiQueue.

Once you have your SetiDriver setup and working properly it is recommended that you use one of the TeAm's SetiQueues.
This will insure you have WUs to crunch when the Seti Server is down.

Our Mentor TeAm for Seti-Classic <----- :wine:<clink>:wine: Kudos to our "Big Brothers"

SETI - BOINC*

1a. If you are listed on the Seti-Classic Roster prior to 14 May 2004, use the following link to get Seti-BOINC running on your computer(s):

Activate your transferred Seti-Classic account

1b. If you are a new SETI participant, use the following link to get Seti-BOINC running on your computer(s):

Create an Account

2. You will receive a confirming email giving you the password you will need to complete the Seti-BOINC installation.

2a. Make sure you're using an active email-address, you must also activate the account before starting to crunch. Just paste the account-key from the email and hit "activate account".

3. Preferences: If you're already running another BOINC-project besides seti@home, choose the 2nd link. Otherwise, the 1st link "This is my first BOINC project". For most the default settings are good enough. After you "ok" the preferences, you're automagically transported to the... download page:

Download the BOINC software program suitable for your system <-- Here's the link in case you ever need it. 😉

4. Open the program and let it proceed automatically to install BOINC on your computer.

5. After the program has installed you should get a screen asking you which program you wish to attach to the BOINC program. The installation package is a little weak at this point and could lead to confusion on what to enter. Eventually there will be more and more PROJECTS that you can "attach" to your BOINC engine.

5a. If you are using a PROXY, navigate the BOINC interface to "Settings/Proxy Server ..." and follow the directions there. Make sure you do this before proceeding any further because otherwise you won't be able to connect to complete the installation.

5b. Since this instruction set is for the SETI project, enter the following for the projects web address:
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu <---Copy and paste this url ... it shows up as a link in our forum but you should only copy and paste it in the appropriate spot.

5c. Obviously, you would enter the BOINC PASSWORD referred to in step #2.

6. Things should go automatically from this point on. If you are running a hyper-threaded CPU or a multiple CPU system you should check to see if in the WORK area (see the tab at the top of the BOINC INTERFACE) if there is a Work Unit being processed for each of your processors (2 for hyper-threaded CPU systems).

6a. The 1st connection will use client-defaults, so if you've changed the cache-settings you will be, in effect, immediately asking for more Work Units. You may not get enough Work Units for multi-cpus during this initial download. Just let the client run for about 10 minutes when it will automatically ask for more Work Units.

7. If everything is working as it should, you'll probably (on NT4 & later) want to let BOINC run as service. To do this, exit the BOINC-gui and open up a cmd-prompt. Navigate to the boinc-directory. You could use the following string to get there more quickly:
cd "c:\program files\boinc" (if you installed BOINC in the default location)

Once there type in: boinc_cli.exe -install and hit the ENTER key.

If you're running XP, you probably also need to go into service-control and change the account BOINC to run as "localsystem".
Now start the service, or reboot.

v3.20 fixed the service-bug.

8. The last and most important step for our New TeAm Mates is to now Join TeAm AnandTech

*This is a work in progress and will be updated, amended, corrected at time goes by. If you think there are things to be corrected, added, or deleted please post right in this thread and I'll attempt to fix them ASAP. 🙂

Top Seti-BOINC Teams

TeAm AnandTech Seti-BOINC

We need some programmers on our TeAm to come up with our own version. Any takers? 🙂

Definitely a hijacking. If you look quickly, you will see the account still showing on the Top 1000 List kept by S@N.

http://www.seti-nl.org/top1000.php?id=2&page=3&sort=0

227. de Wereldomroep

Some of you may have noticed that I stopped posting information about the account a few days ago. The hijacker was obviously monitoring our forums ... even joined our team (with a ZERO account) using the old seti email address of BnT. When I posted his current team affiliation and location, he would quickly relocate. So to keep him in one place (so to speak), I decided to stop posting about it. No matter what he did, the account continued to show up in the Top 1000 Stats. That was the basis of my post, "You can run but you can't hide." 😉

I would like to thank a member of Ars Technica who provided very helpful information. He prefers to remain anonymous for the time being but has posted on our forum as "hmm".

The identity of the thief has not been determined at this time.

As posted elsewhere, Bryan believes their seti email address (hotmail) expired and the thief registered using his old account. Question: Can someone verify this can be done? A simple FORGOT PASSWORD request to SETI then enabled the culprit to change the account's email address and move the account. I still wonder how the thief obtained the seti email address. I don't recall TeAm BnT ever posting their email address so this is still of point of interest.

We have quite a few people using "hotmail" accounts for their Seti Email Address. This might be a good time to make sure the hotmail account stays activated or just change their Seti Email Address to a location that will not expire. 😉

Welcome back TeAm_BnT!😀

Thanks! Smoke for all your efforts in getting this straightened out! 😀

I know everyone is happy to have TeAm_BnT back............ 😀

All this intrigue and mystery has kept my interest going. Glad you were able to solve it. Nice work. 😎

Thanks all for the warm welcome!!!!!

I can see I will enjoy being a part of this TeAm!!!!(again😉)

We do not know for sure. Speculation is the hacker just signed up for the "inactive", "de-activated" hotmail account and then sent a FORGOT PASSWORD message to Seti@Home. I'd like to know if this is possible ... anyone know for sure?

It it is true, then all Seti Accounts using hotmail (and maybe even yahoo and others) are in danger. Especially if their email address is the same as their Seti Name. :frown:
