SETI vs Screensavers

He's a new one for me, I just noticed that SETI literally chokes Microsoft's screensavers, and some 3rd party screensavers to the point of crashing, namely 3d ones. What gets me is, SETI is running in low priority, yet the screensaver won't run. Any ideas?

No idea ,unless the scn svrs run at a lower priority?

Anyway ,why would you want to use those CPU sucking screensavers with SETI anyway?? ;)

Actually, most of us running SETI are of the opinion that the screensavers, especially 3D ones, chokes SETI performance, and thus turn them off. ;);)

Other than that, don't know what to suggest to help, as I've always felt my SETI output was more important than a screensaver, so I either don't use one, or set it to blank. :)

The only time I've ran ss with seti was when other people started one running and I stopped that as soon as I saw it.

Yeah, I know the whole performance thing, but I absolutly love the whole aquarium screensaver. I guess its a tradeoff. :|

So does my mother. She has a fish at home and one at work. Sh!tface is at work and Flucker is at home. Both are dead and float at the top of the screen.

I guess you could stop SETI when you want to watch the fish, as some do when they play games.

That is a nice screen saver ,I suppose you could use SETIHide ,have SETI pause when the SS kicks in ,have the SS run for just 5mins & then go blank screen ,then SETI could run again ,not sure if SETIHide could detect blank screen though

If I use a screensaver the only one I ever use is "Flying Through Space" or "Starfield Simulation" because they really don't impact SETI or other DC program's performance. :p Normally I just set the screensaver to "none" and set the power saving feature to turn off the monitor after 1 hour.

There are different priority levels in windows, 1 being the lowest I think.

UD and other DC stuff runs at 1, Seti runs at 4 though, so maybe the screensavers are lower priority..

Or something like that anyway.....

Buy a real fishtank, breed some rare African catfish, sell the babies, and use the profits to buy a dedicated Seti rig......

Problems solved, next patient please

tried it on mine, I didn't have any probs with it on my 933P3 box, maybe you got a flaky proc, or something. or too much other stuff running in the background, try this:

Start, Run, msconfig, and go to the far right tab and dissable those startups that you don't need to be started up.

Seti likes Blank Screen best. Your screen probably likes it best too.
I also use the monitor power switch, mainly to save electricity ;)
