Seti time and memory boost?

I just bought a MSI RS480M2-IL based on the "ATI Radeon XPRESS 200 Chipset" with a AMD 64 3200+ and I am getting about 2:30 to complete a WU. My work X31 laptop runs at 1.4Ghz and will do a WU in about 2:50.

If I get dual channel memory for the MSI board, would that help speed up my times?

I just bout this machine to crunch seti.... it's a disease.

Unless your AMD 64 has >520kb cache (it's hard to keep track of all the chips these days), if the board supports it, dual channel memory will probably help.

But consider that SETI1 will end soon, and I'm not sure what SETI2 likes.

Memory speed and bandwidth (dual channel) do very little for SETI classic (I've done a LOT of experimenting)....next to nothing. The important things for SETI are CPU clock speed and cache. The more L2 cache, the faster it processes.

Don't forget BT that lowering RAM latencies though does help SETI too

When I switched from SC to DC RAM on my Nfrc2 XP setup it only knocked off about 5mins/WU,(at the time it was doing about 2.5hrs/WU).
Overclocking the FSB will make the biggest difference

Btw my XPM @2.53GHz (180FSB) does normal AR WUs in 2hrs ,your Ath64 should be faster I would of thought (they usually are ,or at least as fast)

I would think 2:05 - 2:10 a wu with your setup.

I will try version 3.03 for seti and see if the mobo will overclock.

My XP1700+ chips @ 2.1 ghz do a .426AR WU in 2hrs 36 mins like clockwork.
One uses a ASUS A7N8X Deluxe mobo & the other an Epox 8RDA+
Both have 512k PC3200 ram @ about 180fsb x 11.5 @ 2-2-2-5 timings.
You could pick up these mobo / cpu combos used for about $100 or less I guess, for WU bang/buck it's hard to beat.

True, using CAS2 does help a little, by just a few minutes. Also, the chipset memory controller makes a big difference...just remembered how much my times improved going from a VIA chipset to an nForce2. The nForce2 mobos are a TON of bang-for-the-buck in DC!

Damn, reminds me I need to replace my current KT266 mobo with a cheap nForce2 one! Computer parts sure eat up a lot of my income, lol.

I would say though that CAS2 makes more than a few mins difference
On my mothers old rig (PC133 RAM,Duron 1.2GHz) it knocks about 20 mins off! (from about 5hrs30mins to 5hrs 10mins)
And yeah chipset latencies play a big part too ,& the KT266 was one of the worst! ,the KT266a was much better but still not as good as an nfrc2 of course
