Is there a program out there that will throddle down Seti if a set temperature is reached?

There is nothing that i know of that will do this.

However if you wish to throttle down Seti when a certain temperature is reached, then you should be thinking about better cooling. Seti will run your CPU @ 100% use, and therefore the max temp you will reach. If this is too high for your liking, then when you run games or other apps, then you will still "overheat" when running those.

What is your current cooling setup, we may be able to help you tweak this 🙂

Like Confused said, if you're worried about heat when you're running SETI you should really look into a better heatsink/fan combo. SETI will run your CPU 100% so it's going to generate more heat but I'm willing to bet an hour of 3D gaming will heat up your system more because it stresses your CPU and graphics chip as well.

Yeah but just for arguments sake, is there a program that will throttle SETI (or any other program for that matter) down?

I don't know if there is a generic program, but the Distributed.Net (DNET RC5/OGR) client had the ability to pause based on tempurature thresholds you set. Unfortunately, I think it only worked with certain non Windows OS, and I don't know if anyone ever got it to work.

Some newer motherboards have a BIOS feature that will throttle the cpu down when a certain temperature is reached. This is generally used as a safegaurd against frying the chip. There are temp monitoring programs such as MotherBoardMonitor 5 that you can look into, but not sure if they have any type of throttling feature.......

I use MBM5 & it doesn't have any throttling feature that I know ,though it does have the ability to run other programs & turn them on & off according to which sensor you link it to.So you could turn SETI on & off according to a certain cpu temp ,though the proper answer would be to fix the cooling🙂

AFAIK there is no way to throttle down SETI.If you that worried about temps you should be looking at improving your cooling as Confused said

Hi. I have fairly light cooling, with my computer rigged for quiet running. My temps are ok, but as its starting to get warmer here, my case temp starts climing as does my core temp. I was just hoping there was a way to force 50% idle cycles once a temp reaches X degrees.

The only thing that will actually cut cycles at a set temperature is a Pentium 4, and it's a hardware thing, not software.

Like everybody else said, you need better cooling. Fix the problem, don't just put a bandaid solution on it.

Well, atleast on some systems you've got the option to cut down the cpu-speed if it's more than x minutes since last key/mouse is used... On some you can probably set the %-cut also. Not exactly that you're looking for...

Last time I blew a cpu-fan, the only thing I detected was the seti-times was much higher than normal. This was an P2-333, so I don't think it's just P4 that has any form for self-preserverance.

Now that you mention it ,I remember an old PII 233 that The_One had ,same thing happened there ,cpu fan died & the WU time tripling was the 1st sign the fan had stopped!
