It might be a tad premature to start this countdown, but it has only been a little over 1.5 Months ago that HP was 1,000,000 ahead....we, sometime in the next 24 hours, will go under 500k to reach HP (barring something happening).

Hellburner's thread from 11/29 when we crossed under 1,000,000 to HP.

Another point to this thread is that, unless something turns tremendously in our favor, we will be fighting to get 6th position back just by PASSING HP at that point....and BBR will be getting 5th spot.

BBR has less than 25k to go.....

Strive for 5.....More in 04! :Q

Let's go.....

I don't have much personal firepower to contribute. (1 home desktop, + 1 laptop that I have to elevate to allow airflow to keep it from over-heating) However, I have friends on mailing lists, and sent the following to the lists. I hope I didn't cause any problems!

This is a completely off-topic post, but relates to something that I have recently become interested in: DIstributed Computing. What is Distributed Computing you ask? Distributed Computing (or DC) basically involves finding ways for your CPU to keep working during its idle time. A good FAQ for that can be found here: http://www.anandtech.com/guides/viewfaq.html?i=13 The FAQ is from a team called TeamAnandTech. (I liked the team name because it has that chess grandmaster name we talked about in it!)

The grand-daddy of all DC projects is SETI@Home. Well, Grandpa is getting ready to close down, and there is a big, final push for teams to finish high in the standings of the team competition. There is no money for people in this project, there is only scientific research that will a) prove or disprove the viability of DC (as opposed to spending billions of dollars on supercomputers) and b) prove (or find lack of proof, since you can't prove the negative) the existence of Extra-terrestrial life that has the ability to send out radio signals. Our team is gaining ground quickly on a Hewlett-Packard Team, and fighting off a challenge from another team. Some of you have one computer, others have more than one computer that you can dedicate to the cause; in any case, every little bit helps. Would you consider joining TeamAnandTech in this scientific, and competitive quest? If so, instructions for participating may be found here: http://www.gygabite.com/smokeball/sigline.htm

If you are uncomfortable putting your own e-mail address down for fear of SPAM, you have permission to put my e-mail address down as the address of record. (bob@jamesgang.ws) If you do that, please let me know privately.

Nice email message there, bob :)

Nice and "if you want to", good background, and i like the "you can use my account" ;)

Let's hope it brings at least 1 person to the TeAm :)

Thanks...but let me guess...you saw that "you can use my account" as the shameless ploy that it was to get extra help to rise in the ranks! :D

I have a few friends that this may influence. We will see.

Hehe... As long as the production goes toward TeAm Anandtech I couldn't care less how many users run under bob's account. The more the merrier! With any luck we'll have a new top dog on Smoke's weekly average production list!

Good idea and good luck Bob! :D

Interestingly enough, I found someone who is close to 5000 WU's and is not affiliated with any group. I am trying to encourage him to join the Team. He doesn't want to join a team because a) he is afraid to lose his WU's so close to getting his 5000 cert. (I have gently told him that he wouldn't, but am trying to get another person to say so, since he has been going longer than me!) and b) he wants to know the political background of the group. (Long story.)

AFAIK, this group is fairly diverse in their opinions...but it would be discussed in another topic.

I don't really care who gets the credit, I just enjoy the challenge of fighting off BBR!

1. An individual keeps credit for all WUs processed, no matter what team they are on, and still receive their individual certs.

2.
political background
I don't think Team Anandtech has a political background as such. We are an international, very diverse group, whose main interests are DC projects, technology, and stats!

We tend to try to keep politics out of here because of our diverse backgrounds. :)

We also believe that every individual is important to the team, and it doesn't matter whether they are crunching 1 WU or 1,000 WUs a day, they will still get the same amount of respect and help from teammates. :D

Some of the reasons I've been a Team Anandtech member since 1999. Greatest bunch of caring, helpful folks I know! :D

What needs to be done here, is to compare active members to other teams....take their crunching average, Hr./ WU. How does that balance out? Does it accurately reflect production rate to completed WU's?

BBR has over 1,000 active crunchers (per this thread - click me).

Unless something happens, I'll have to change the title of this thread....SETI: The #6 countdown - HP..... :(

More...more....more! :Q

The miracle in 04....More in 04....Strive for 5...........

Friends.....Romans......Countrymen......(TeAmmates).....Lend me your WU's.....

Fore I come to bury BBR....not to Praise them......:Q

497,678 to HP....but only 23k away from BBR! :Q...so :) and :(

Heh... Find someone who will join and stay with (not team jump) our team with an equal amount of WU's and they can merge my account into theirs and have all of the credit. All that counts at this moment is finishing a head of BBR and hopefully getting into 5th place. :)

The "Average CPU Time per work unit" is calculated by dividing the "Total CPU Time" by the "Results Received". It is based on every WU ever processed. There is no correlation between an "Active" or "In-active" Member and their "production rate to completed WUs".

The term, Inactive Member, is defined in different ways by different web-sites.

(1) "Inactive Member" is defined by Seti@Home as any participant that hasn't turned in a WU in the last two-weeks.

The definition of "Inactive Member" is (sort of) described on the "SetiAtHome Founder's Access Web Page" by the following line: "Group members may only be removed if they have been inactive for more than 2 weeks". If you are the Founder (or acting in that capacity) of any Seti Team you can see this on the "Founder's Access Web Page".

(2) "Inactive Member" is defined on some independently maintained stat sites in various ways. Generally, if the stat site only keeps up with the past 6, 7, or 8 days of production, the term is assigned to members who show ZERO completed WUs in the corresponding number of days.

An example of one of those stat sites is: The TeAm AnandTech Stats Page brought to you by WIZ .

So the answers to your questions are:

What needs to be done here, is to compare active members to other teams....take their crunching average, Hr./ WU. How does that balance out?
"It doesn't."

Does it accurately reflect production rate to completed WU's?
"No."

All of that said, I would definitely like to encourage your speculation and inquisitiveness ... keep the old thinking cap on and the electrons moving. ;) :)

THAT is one of the most dedicated and outstanding statements that I've read on this forum. I salute you Robor.....your dedication to this TeAm is outstanding. I would offer the same, but since I'm part of a mini-TeAm, I can't pledge for the others.

Outstanding TeAmmate and commitment! :D

Great idea! I'll start looking for someone to join our team (BBR) and I'll merge the Starfire Cruncher Assoc. account with theirs.

Now wait a minute... Let's get this straight. If I do that we consider it a good idea. If you do it we consider it underhanded and cheating. :p ;)

Uhm, not since v3.03 was enforced. The last 3 years it's been 4 weeks. ;)

How fast someone crunches can be computed by this:
[(new #wu * new average) - (old #wu * old average)] / (new #wu - old #wu)

Of course I'll recommend using atleast a week here, since otherwise you'll get some large errors. With 100 added wu all current team-mates should have less than 8 minutes error in the resulting average. :)
Oh, and using Total CPU-time doesn't work, since this have much larger uncertainties. ;)
