To the SETI Crew:

My adventures into enemy territory today over at TeamLambChop kind of had me worried! It seems as though the SETI World has 3 big gun teams in terms of production - and TA is not one of them! :Q TLC, currently No.1 in the world, sustains over 11000 WUs/day, SETI Germany, No. 2 in the world sustains around 12000WUs/day :)Q) and 3rd placed S@NL is chugging along at around 16000WUs/day (over the last week anyway). TA SETI seems to be the next biggest producer, but we're down at about an average of around 6000WUs/day (given that C&C give us one of their monster dumps every couple of days, and usually we are at about 5600 or so WUs/day). Don't get me wrong, we've basically doubled our output over the last 10 months or so, and it's been a great TeAm effort :D:D

So, before I go on... CONGRATS TEAM!! :D:D:D

Now... I think we have it within ourselves here at TA to be not only the best SETI (and Distributed) community in the world (as we already know we are ;)) but also the biggest producers in the world! It looks like we'd have to triple our daily production to manage that, but if we take a step back and see what needs to be done, it doesn't look quite as tough.

1. We need MORE members!!] :D I think Engineer said this best... ;)
2. Existing and future members need to step up production! Granted, we all avoid wasting CPU cycles whenever we can, but surely there must be some more around the place that can be used for our benefit!!
3. We need to get our inactive members active again!

That's it. Simple, right? As far as recruitment goes, I'm amazed a site like Anandtech with its huge audience gives us a team that is LESS THAN half the size of Team Lamb Chop. Nonetheless, all it takes is existing members to introduce another member each, and we'll have 4000+ members!!

Now, if each of our active members were to add another PC to their herd, that alone would amount to about another 2000WUs/day!! I, for my part, am looking to add another 100 WUs worth of PCs by the end of next month, and will hopefully have doubled my output (or more) by the end of the year!! :D Of course, I count myself lucky to have access to so many computers, but surely we must have access to untapped computers around the place?!

Well, that's enough of a rant from me!! :D Keep up the great work TeAm - and always remember that our community is more important that our WU count!! But still, let's get our WU count up ;)

PieDerro, this is all true I must admit.

But let's be honest, who here isn't putting in 100% effort? Unless they don't have any TeAm spirit, they better! :D I could find a few more computers, but their processing power probably wouldn't be very high, still they are crunching some WU's and that's all that counts.

As Anandtech is a community where people have to stumble on, or find by word of mouth, it's hard to draw lots of members. Your solutions are of course the best way to go about expanding, but it's not as easy as it might first look :):)

Nevertheless, I think with all our efforts it is pretty hard to match very large teams such as the three you have listed - But hey, one day we'll be #1. and they will all be jealous of us! :D:D:cool:

Your right ,time to step up output ,we've been stuck at just 6k/day for a while now;)

A few things ,your 1st idea will yield the best results ,as Engineer dramatically proved last year, though it needs to be a sustained campaign to get those kind of results!.
2.I can't atm ,though I always look out for extra ships to assimilate ;) ,I assume everyone else does to ,but its definalty worth checking!

3.I tried that about a year ago ,whilst myself,Smokeball & about a 12 dozen volunteers did have some success at that it took a helluva lot of time ,& that was when we had about a 1000 less members!:Q.I think we got about 10 members active again via a high profile thread in the forum,PMing & through forum email adds.
Phase 2 was to use their SETI email adds & targetting the bigger inactive members 1st ,unfortunately we never got around to it ,partially my fault as about that time I became very busy (new girlfriend;)),the other problem was that only members with founder access rights can see peoples SETI email adds ,& broadcasting those adds would probably break privacy rules. This means that only a handful of people who have that access can send personal emails to inactive members, a big job for a handful of people.

So I say lets recruite! :D

[edit]
Forgot to say I assimilated a P4 1.8Ghz a few weeks back ,& by chance I'm upgrading my Pentium 233MMX@266 to a Duron 1.1Ghz@??? this week (though it won't be crunchin 24/7)
I guess the other thing I can do is to get The_One crunchin on his home rigs again ,especially his Ath 1Ghz@1.4 GHz ,he said he was going to but I'd bet he hasn't sorted it out yet!:Q

I think one of the major areas where we could expand is to get in contact with Inactive members.

Just looking at SmokeBall and WIZ's latest stat creation, there are a lot of inactive members that have the same nick on the boards!

Its always nice to recieve a PM, so we could go about it that way, at least with a few people - the more the merrier! :)

I'm one of the folks that's hurt the Team's SETI production lately, having gone from @ 70wu/day to about @ 6wu/day, but you know I needed a break. ;)

My intent is to help our TeAm finish the RC5 project, and then I will return to the SETI effort - hopefully, there are others who will join with me in this endeavor. ;)

RC5 still isn't done yet?! ;)

What's the status on that project? I haven't checked in a while...

EDIT: Just checked...project will end in 259 days at current rates.

Could end in less time with more TA firepower too. :D

Consider also that the sooner we finish the RC5 project, the sooner more resources will be freed up for other current TA projects. ;)

Well, I'm going to be upgrading my 500mhz "nibbler" to a full fledged "cruncher" soon. AMD XP 1800+ in the next month or so. If i could find a good deal on a new machine, i'd like to add another one here at home.

I've also said something to one of the girls at work(the more computer savy one) about installing SETI there. I haven't said anything to the boss yet as he's been in a foul mood lately. One of these days i'll get him when he's a little more jovial & see what he thinks about it. He's mildly interested in radio astronomy, so there is hope. Potencially(sp?) 6 or 7 machines, though only 3 have internet connection.

Also, i'm pretty active on the message boards on the SETI webpage. If you want, i'll put a small blurb at the bottom of my posts along with a URL to the TeAm AnandTech SETI group page. Or whatever URL is appropriate.

Whilst it would make a huge impact to re-animate say 1/2 the flatline members ,the actual reality of this happening is very small.:(
Many inactive members are no longer (if ever) active in the forums either. But if you target who you PM knowing they are active forum members you may get a handful of members back ,I'm not saying don't do it ,because it would be worthwhile ,just don't expect huge numbers to come active again.

By far the most successful way of increasing team output is to recruite new members

Just be like NetworkMan and myself, and spend all your $$ on SETI crunchers :)

Well, I bought a new toy today and I have a K6-2 that I can fireup again. So there is #2.

There is also a girl I work with that thinks (I repeat thinks) she is hot stuff with computers so I bet the odds are good that I can get her and her boyfriend to join us with their P4's (there they go thinking MHz are everything:roll;). So there is #1.

I guess since I don't have founders rights #3 is out of my reach.

I keep eyeing some of our servers here, but they wont let me install seti on them. If I can somehow get my boss fired and I take his place........hmmmmmmm

Well, from what I read over at the unofficial offsite TA SETI forum ( Click to Visit ) I think the request for support is almost done. Maybe we'll get a response and maybe not. We'll have to wait and see. All the ideas in the request are good and for those that don't know the newsletter idea is included.

One thing is certain, the TeAm needs more membership if we are going to move out of the #11 spot. We've already seen HW France step up their production to near our level and with Bandai back producing at DSLR that 400K gap my begin to close quickly.
