I've noticed ALOT of seti talk in the forums recently. I myself do RC5, but an glad to see that there are a good many avid subscribers to seti. However, I was wondering if its good to have so many different projects in 1 forum. What about also offering seperate project forums? comments?

We are all here doing Distributed computing! Its all our thing. I like many others are involved in multiple projects, SETI/RC5/GF, and its nice to have one place to come. While your idea is kinda cool, I dont really have any problems with the way it is now. Its nice to come to one place for everything.

I think the similarities outweigh the differences, besides I participate(d) in almost all the Distributed projects, OGR being the primary one now.
Besides, there is plenty of room in this forum, unlike GH, HD, FS/T.
It's good that there is a lot of SETI discussion right now, with a new client on the horizon and new users that are learning how to optimize the client. That's an interesting aspect about SETI, memory optimization is very important to get the last ounce of performance out of a machine. Argueably, a computer is not fully optimized until it has been fully optimized to run SETI.
True, the SETI crowd is a very loyal one. But I would sure miss not seeing the post traffic, SETI stats updates, and those classy "SETI @Home Welcomes xyz" posts.
I have noted as well that many SETI users are doing other projects as back-up to SETI, either as an alternative on those all too numerous occasions where the SETI server is down, or with machines that labor a bit too much when SETI is running as a background process ala Gamma/RC5/OGR. In that case, you can run say RC5 as the primary background process and kick over to SETI using screen saver mode when the machine is not in use, which can then kill the RC5 process. Most ingenious and efficient.
Either way, the people that are interested in distributed computing will tend to have at least some interest in all the projects, so I think we can all stay together for now.

I have noting against other projects, just I'm an orianization freak, and I like having things in their own places sometimes. I do enjoy reading the whole forum, but seperate forums as an addition would be nice too

Currently, I only do SETI, but I have done RC5 in the past(for about 50,000 blocks). I am waiting for version 2.0 of GammaFlux to be available, and then I will get involved on that one as well.

Being new to this Forum and S@H I would like to know about the other DC topics. I read some of the threads and see stuff like the Federation, DCP, RC5, etc. and don't have a clue. Well, the only clue I have is that DCP=BAD, and you seem to be trying to crack some type security key and it has something to do with bit length.

So, it would be good for the other TA member to know what else is going on and to know what computers work best with which DC projects. I have a box or two full of parts and could put together a few more systems. But, I don't want to waste the time for a P233MMX running SETI.

Unfortunately, this page is a little hard to follow.

The top chart compares relative efficiency of RC5 to Gamma Flux. The Cyrix chips are good at RC5, and the Pentium (classic) at Gamma.

Second chart compares RC5 to Seti, where Cyrix is best at RC5, and Xeons rule in Seti.

Last chart is Gamma vs Seti.

Since OGR is not included here, I will add that AMD K6s rock at OGR, and Pentium MMX suck at OGR. Pentium MMXs are very good at RC5 however, and K6s suck at RC5. Generally the OGR relative efficiencies are the same as Gamma.

Presently, I have machines working on Gamma, RC5, Seti and OGR.

Here's my logic;

K6s do OGR period, because they are best at it.

Pentium MMXs do RC5 period, because they are best at it.

Only fast 100mhz bus+ machines do Seti, because I like fast WU times.

Machines that I don't see very much, and have intermittant dial-up Internet connection do RC5, because RC5 will last the longest of the contests and doesn't require much attention.

Machines that have AOL for internet access do Gamma, because Gamma will actually flush through AOL where RC5/OGR are a pain on AOL. go figure.

Generally everything else that I have is on a LAN that flushes to a Dnet personal proxy and the clients themselves do not have Internet access. P2s and better do OGR, everything else RC5.

The 'Federation' (Engineer, MadMerc, Dantoo and others) that you mentioned is our biggest RC5 mini-team. They crack under the rc5cannibalcows@.... email.

Some of the other RC5 minis are The Borg (Russ, DanC, Loner and others) under the Russ@compucheap email. The Team Within TeamAnandtech or TWTA (RaySun2Be, Osmo and others) can't remember the email. And RC5 Crackheads (dvch, MWalkden and others)

The only OGR mini is GiantNT4VizMechThunderStorm (NT4 Mike, Viztech, Mechbgon, Thunder, and Stormgiant)

A Pentium MMX would do SETI WU's in about 20 hrs or so ,you could have it crunching for me ,I dont mind the high WU times
