SETI (& RC5??) BSD client on the Dream cast!!!?

Yes, there's RC5 clients for OpenBSD, NetBSD, FreeBSD, and BSD/OS. Haven't a clue if you could get it to run on a Dreamcast but I'd sure be interested in finding out. 🙂

BTW, the Dreamcast has a SH-4 RISC processor (200 MHz CPU) and 16MB of main RAM. Dnet's client speeds page show other 200MHz RISC processors getting anywhere from as low as 92Kk/s to 397Kk/s. I would think the Dreamcast would fit in that range somewhere, but I don't know much of anything about this type of processor. Not a very good performer but it'd certainly be fun to see if it was even possible to do.

The DC's SH4 processor was when launched the best mathmatical cpu on the market, 200mhz SH$ was actually quicker than a PII-400 at the time (mathmatically that is)... Or so Sega reckond in all the press interview's we did with them....

Interesting ,so it would certainly be worth a go with RC5🙂 ,as for SETI though that 16Mb RAM limit could be a problem ,assuming the BSD client uses the same amount of RAM as a Windows client (does it?) that would only leave about 2Mb free for the OS.
The other problem I see is where to store the progessing WU (state.sah etc) for SETI ,if it had to be saved via its serial port to a PC that could also really hurt its performance.

How long have DC's been about now?

I doubt the Dreamcast CPU will be very helpful at RC5. Game consoles use and need floating point operations significantly more than they do integer operations, which explains the high optimization of the FPU. Take for example the Playstation 2's CPU. It is many, many times faster than the current x86 chips in floating point operations, but the reverse is true of integer operations.

SETI would be your best bet for the Dreamcast and PS2. RC5 may run nicely on the PS2's CPU assuming that they can and do optimize for the various vector units it has. I know I would run it on my PS2 if they were to release a client 🙂.

Fair comment ,so that would just leave the memory quantity problem & where to save the progressing WU.

BTW Solo177 ,I seemed to remember you saying you might join TA SETI ,will you be? 🙂
