Check out IJump's excellent race prediction analysis. 🙂

For those of you waiting on a race, please bear with me. I've had a extremely busy week which would've been a back breaker even if I hadn't been out of town for five days. I'll get to it this weekend. Promise.

Instead of commentary this morning I'd like to deliver a short sermon. 😉

Last week, I spent four days in Myrtle Beach with 14 gentlemen and their families who served aboard a Buckeley class destroyer escort during World War II, the USS Rich DE-695. DE's (later classified as frigates) were a smaller version of destroyers that were designed mostly to escort and protect troop and cargo ships as they crossed the Atlantic between the US and Europe. They carried some impressive armament and firepower for their size (they carried a crew of anywhere between 189 and 219) and could therefore assume the roll of a destroyer in battle should the need arise. The USS Rich escorted six convoys between the east coast of the United States and Londonderry, Ireland between the time of her christening in October of 1943 and May of 1944. She received orders in May, 1944 that she would not be returning to the United States from Londonderry. Instead, she was ordered to England to prepare for duty during the allied invasion of France on June 6th, 1944. The Rich was to run cover for the larger gun ships, destroyers and battleships, as they provided fire support for the troops landing on the various beaches of Normandy.

Stationed off Utah Beach near the St. Marcouf islands, the Rich survived the first two days of the invasion and performed her duties in exemplary fashion. On the morning of June 8th, the USS Glennon, a destroyer, struck a mine and the Rich was ordered to her aid to take on survivors and render any other assistence required. On the way to the Glennon, a mine exploded about 50 yards off the Rich's starboard beam. Shortly thereafter, two more mines exploded, both directly underneath the ship, breaking her in two. She sank in twenty minutes, taking 89 of her crew of 219 with her. Nearly all who were not killed were injured, many severely. My dad was aboard the Rich when she went down and received a purple heart for his injuries.

Every year since 1991, the remaining survivors of the Rich's crew meet for a reunion from June 5th through June 8th, with a banquet and memorial service being held on June 8th, the anniversary of the Rich's sinking. They share a special bond that only they can fully appreciate and understand. I have attended the last two reunions and these wonderful people have taken me into their family, many even going so far as to call me "shipmate". I have sat riveted to my seat listening to the stories of their experiences. Some are funny. Many are tragic. All are inspiring. These men, most of them in their late 70's and early 80's, were merely boys 18, 19, 20 years old when they were called to serve their country. Aboard the DE's, nearly all were enlisted reservists, trained for six weeks then sent directly to battle and told to do their part to save the world. And they did.

World War II veterans are dying at the rate of nearly 1500 per day. It won't be long before the "greatest generation" our world has known are all gone. Their history, their deeds, their sacrifice must not be forgotten. It is because of that generation we are free to enjoy the liberties we take so severely for granted today. We so often don't want to associate with the elderly for many reasons. We have our own lives to experience or perhaps for some, it's too much of a reminder that each of us will grow old and die someday. The elderly are a wonderful resource of knowledge. They have a whole lifetime of experiences, of lessons learned. If any of you have grand parents (or parents) of that age or are acquainted with someone from that generation, sit down and talk to them. Listen to them. Learn from them. Preserve their history.

Regular commentary will return tomorrow.

PS - I've published a website for the USS Rich if anybody would care to read more about her and her crew. There are many articles and stories written by the survivor's about their experiences.

Thanks OD!

Excellent Sermon!

I mentioned in a race thread last week that I wish I had recorded all of my Grandfathers stories from WWII! Now that he is gone all I have are half stories as I can not recall them that well anymore. He use to be in the motor pool under Paton. Use to tell me about how when they lost vehicles in battle they would go back if possible and remove all of the ID plates. Then when they would come a cross a vehicle that was the same type they would steal it and put the ID plates on it. Bingo one less vehicle missing😀 Yep I wish I had those stories now to tell my son about his Great Grandpa. 🙁

Congrats! to the Milestone Makers! 😀

Thanks! for the stats, OD! 😀

and a THANKS! to all those who have passed on while preserving our heritage, our freedoms. Thanks for the "sermon", OD. 🙂

Thanks OD 🙂

As someone whose Grandfather proudly served as a career Navy Man I have some understanding about what you speak of. My grandfather spent his whole life serving his country and didn't regret a single bit of it. He would tell anyone who would listen that the Navy was the best thing he ever did in his life. I miss hearing his stories about those days 🙁 Thanks for reminding me and helping me to rekindle them in my mind 😀

Congrats to all the milestone makers 😀

I agree 100%.

Thanks OD.

Someone must have shut my computers off or there was a power outage or something... 🙁

Thanks OD 🙂

My Grandfather was a radio technician in the RAF - his job was to fix/tune the radios in the aircraft, and he mainly serviced the Spitfire type of fighter 🙂 Thanks for the sermon.
