FYI, Appro sent me a promotional email, here's the gist of it:

Entry-Level Server
? Dual AMD Opteron? processor 240 Series
? 2GB total system memory
? One 40 GB IDE Hard Drive (internal)
? 24X slim CD-ROM

And that's a 1U setup like this. The price? Doesn't seem too bad, just $2195. The question is, how long can you hide it from your wife :p

I was wondering if Tom's benchmark is aggregating the output of the two CPUs, rather than on a per-CPU basis. Doing a 0.417AR WU in about an hour is just insane for a single processor :Q

Interesting...It said 2xOperton...did it do two WUs in 1h8m?

It seems that Tom already has a multi-CPU Mobo and two of the chips! Looks like that product is getting closer than we thought! :Q

That is my question also. Or would the 2 chips crunch on the same wu? I think they are set to be released today........I have no money so I will not even look! ;)

Speculation on my part, but I think tom was using a single instance of Seti for those #'s.

2 x Xeon 3.06 (3066/133/2x133): 1:20
1 x P4 3.06 (3066/133/2x166): 1:35

I'm assuming a single Seti thread here's running on the Xeon and the Xeon completes its job faster due to a larger cache (though memory is a bit slower)

If so, the Opteron's a serious Seti cruncher :)

indeed tom only ran one instance, but 2x should crunch 2 every 1hr15min or so.

WOW 40+ WU's per day from just one machine.

Hmmmm...I've still got $6000 from my Tax Refund sitting in the bank.....

Option 1: Send money to Mortgage

Option 2: Dual Opteron system...

Hmmmmmmmm?

;)

To keep the house and cars or to get a new cruncher... that's a very hard decision... ;)

See my first post up above... you're looking at around $2200 for a dual-240 with 2Gb of RAM, in a 1U chassis. :)

Clarification....I have only one payment (mortgage) and the EXTRA $6000 isn't required to pay it...hehe! :p :Q ;)

And I'm just a poor HS student, so I earn in one year only 10% of what he's getting in a tax refund! :disgust:

This year, I didn't have to file any tax forms because I didn't make enough money to warrant it, but I did the calculations anyway and found out that I'd have gotten back a whole whopping 23 cents. Not worth the stamp needed to send the forms in. ;)

I'm still paying for this Athlon XP2100+ rig I built in November (paying on CC and with the wife... ;) ) Looks like Opteron is out for me! Sweet times though!

My 1600 XP is not even on the Benchmark chart, that's when you now you're really behind the ol 8 ball.

My 1700+ Tbred B is happily crunching away at 2400+ (2GHz). :p

It really pisses me off that the late adopters (those who just recently got 1700+ Tbred B's) are getting 2.5GHz (that's over 3000+ speeds, isn't it?) out of their chips with significantly lower voltages than I am using on mine. :frown:
