SETI: Official Countdown to WU Zero out day thread

dmcowen674

I wanted to get a little clarification of this SETI 1 and SETI 2. It's more of a phase 1 to phase 2 or think of it as getting the engine changed in your car, same car but the engine starts at Zero miles.

I got the following below from Dr Anderson today 9-12-2003.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SETI@home is not ending!

BOINC is just a new "platform" for SETI@home (and other projects).

We're going to make the transition from the current SETI@Home to SETI@Home/BOINC as smooth as possible;

we'll copy all accounts and teams over.

The only thing is that credit will start over of zero for everyone (BOINC doesn't use "workunits" for credit, there's a more flexible system that handles projects with varying-size workunits).

Personaly I'm not looking foward to the change. Seti1 is a very mature project and has so many useful 3rd party applications.
With the current Seti I have a Queue on one machines and all of my others connect to it over the network throught the day. And then at 10:00PM it dials up and sends/recieves new WUs for 2 hours while I am sleeping.
I dont know too much about bonic, maybe it has such features built in that allow it to act as a local proxy server and schedule connetions. Above all else I hope the seti project remains dial-up friendly, if it takes more than about 6MB/day for my 3 rigs I dont know what I will do.

Same here titanmiller! Can you imagine me telling my 86 year old Mother to switch clients! Yeah, right!

Thanks for the update David!

edit......gonna be a hell of a race out of the gate....

Better start getting those motors warmed up and ready to go 😀

well hell, looks like i'll be pulling out all the stops and getting that other rig up ! Now to find a 766 celly and a slocket..... 😀

Does this mean that SETI 1 will officially end? That no more WUs will be fed to the SETI CLI or our SetiQueues?

As long as we can still use SetiQue and the other add-ons!

Otherwise it'll be a pain to reconfigure all the fleets.

I think we ought to hear something from Ken renis about SETIQ & BOINC ,I for one would like to carry on using it for BOINC ,even if it does have WU caching.

Conjur
S@H1 will end at some point (dunno when) ,1&2 will overlap for a while.

LOL 🙂 ,get your rigs ready & roaring for the start😉

It wouldn't be technically ending, just WU's as you knew them no longer being used. Not sure what the new Data Blocks will be called.

Guess a new CLI and new SETIQUE based on BOINC code would have to be written too.

As a person who has done a few engine swaps, I can tell you it can go either way. Sometimes it's a smooth transition, but other times it becomes a nightmare! :Q

I'm not looking forward to all of the manual un/re-installs for my 50+ clients but I do look forward to a (hopefully) cheatproof project. Thanks David! 😀

Hi Greg, Robor and everyone,

I forwarded your questions to Dr Anderson you gave to me Greg. I wasn't able to PM you back because I got bumped off the AT subscription servers (it ran out) and they are not having any re-subscriptions (this is a concern, what does it mean?).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Items that would be nice to know:

1. Will the TeAm AnandTech registration (Current ID and PASSWORD) just be copied over to BOINC? What do the TeAm AnandTech Administrators need to do?
2. Will each member have to JOIN TeAm AnandTech after they have loaded BOINC and signed up for AstroPulse (or whatever)?
3. Will there be any way for mini-teams to monitor their own production ... such as we now use SetiQueue for a lot of our mini-teams to process through?

If you have the time to ask Dr. Anderson about these questions I would be most appreciative

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1) My best guess on #1 is it would be a blanket copy over to new Servers.

2) Because of #1 shouldn't have to JOIN over again.

3) Since WU's are what are actually changing, that new software to Monitor the new style of "Data Blocks" ,(I asked what would be the name of the new Work Units) would have to be made for Monitoring and Ques, if Ques are possible even.

Just my guesses since it is different code.

I hope some kind of Queue will be ready when the switch is made. It will be difficult to know which machine stopped sending completed units without a Queue.

The bold part is the part that worries me. 🙁
