Hi all.

I'm not a member of the SETI team or anything but I find it fascinating and as a computer enthusiast I swing by this forum ocassionally while I'm browsing the other Anandtech forums.

Today the History Channel is running a bunch of shows related to UFOs, extra terrestrials, etc. This one show on around 5:00'ish was talking about detecting and searching for extra terrestrial intelligence. They mentioned Nasa programs, various space probes, the term "SETI", various radio telescopes including the Archipeligo (however it's spelled) radio telescope that the distributed computing SETI project gets it's data from, the idea of computers analyzing the data, etc., but I didn't hear any mention of this SETI distrubted project at all!

I was surprised since the SETI project is quite a unique phenominon that has been around for years (I don't know how old this program might ahve been, but it didnt' seem that old.) I was kind of disappionted.

I've really lost a lot of faith in the Discovery Channel and similar stations/programs because they always gloss over things in such a super-simplified mannor and always leave out good information ...

Yea, I watched that show. Mentioned that we were looking for signals outside our
solar system, but never mentioned Seti specifically.

The only part concerning SETI that I heard was that SETI sent out a "signal" saying hello. :)

My foundation belief concerning UFOs and such is extra-ordinary claims need extra-ordinary proof.

'nuff said. ;)

Discovery channel is good for some stuff, but I find the PBS channels do a much better job accurately covering subjects in depth.

FWIW, I don't think we're alone in the universe.. as to whether we're being "visited"..?? I really don't know for sure. While admittedly few, there are some things that have NOT been sufficiently explained away.. things even the "experts" cannot conclusively disprove as being something terrestrial or near-Earth in orgin.

For myself, I'd just like to see us prove the existence of even just one non-Earth lifeform somewhere in the universe, just to show we're not alone.. that life can and has developed elsewhere. It could be as simple as fossilized single-cell creatures on Mars, or aqautic-type critters in the oceans under Jupiter's moon Europa, or some intelligent signal from deep space from hundreds of light-years away.
