Hey guys. I might need a laptop for school, so I was wondering what kind of times the following speeds get. I can sacrifice 1 WU/day to save some money. (maybe)

1) P4 1.6GHz (DDR, GF4 GO)
2) P3 1.2GHz (SDR, GF2, about the same price as the P4 but has lower power consumption)
3) Celeron 1.06GHz

And of course, 1 SO-DIMM of 128MB from factory. I'll get another 256MB stick from Crucial. Right now I'm leaning towards a 1.6GHz P4 for ~$1500.

Dell educational pricing

I would choose the one with the Tualitin core (-M) processor if available. Those really rock at SETI compared to their Intel counterparts. :)

Thanks Ray. How much faster would a 1.2GHz P3 (Inspiron 4100) be than a 1.6GHz P4(Inspiron 8200)?

I know. :) He was asking about Intel P3, P4, and Celeron lappies, wasn't he?

:D

I had a tualitin core lappy PIII750 I think, that was kicking WUs out at ~5hr30min per WU, Win2KPro, nothing else running. Compared to my standard PIII 933Mhz desktop that averages 7hr27min per WU, Win2Kpro, nothing else running.

I'm not sure how much of a difference on those two, I don't have anything near that fast to compare it with. :(

ohh and by the way intel just released some new P4-m processors on monday (1.9 and 2.0 i think) so if you wait a few weeks prices should drop on the whole lineup

If I remember right the 8200 series is more of a desktop replacement while the 4100 is more of a traditional laptop. So if you're going to be moving it around a lot you might want the 4100 anyway.

Oh, when I did the Ars benchmark with my P4 1.6A DDR266 I got 4:32 WU times.

I have a Dell 8200 P4 1.6A with 256 megs of RAM running Windows XP Pro that does WUs in about 4:30 on average.

Not too shabby for a laptop!
