SETI Mentor TeAm could use a few more volunteers! :-)

If you would like to act as a big brother(sister) to some of our new members, the Mentor TeAm could certainly use your help. 🙂

All you have to do is speak up and you will be put right into the rotation. Don't be shy ... this is also a very nice way to develop a close relationship with your new teammates. 😀

This is a nice little system. I've had to take a break for a while so I can sort things out - we need a few more to fill the ranks 🙂

All that is involved is saying 'hi' and then seeing how they get on, answering questions and then doing a little checking up once in a while to make sure they are still producing - if not we can ask if they have a problem etc, and can sometimes keep them producing until they get hooked! 🙂

Just like a crack dealer.😉

Greg -

I wanna do my part to help the TeAm so go ahead and add me to the list. I've not been as active in the forums lately but I'll make sure to keep up with checking on my PM's for any questions.

That's great Robor. Be sure to check the offsite forum for the assignments. 😉

I would still like to know what it entails😉 ,couldn't see the thread about it in other forum.

Afraid I can't volunteer atm, this is going to be a busy month for me ,got stuff to sort out with my Diabetes (newly diagnosed 1mth ago🙁),car needs work & Mot cert & I'm also moving out of my fathers place(again!) & living with a friend end of the month ,gonna have 'lite'(128k) broad band there😀.
So I won't be around on any reliable basis for a while

It's a big brother ... little brother kind of thing. Just another way to be helpful to our new members. 😀

You remember, sort of like me and you. 😛 😀

If you need anyone else to help out, feel free to contact me. I am more than willing to help out, but am unsure of the details.

Another thing to remember is that a mentor does not need to know everything, there are very few of us that do... 😉

A mentor is just a point of contact to help a new TeAm member navigate through what can seem like an endless amount of data, tools, and names, and point them in the right direction and help find answers to any questions they might have....

As IJump said, it's not about knowing everything! I have said to my new recruits that if they need help to contact me, and if i don't know the answer then i will find someone who does know better! 🙂

I've PMed 2 people so far (both people with many WUs already!), and not got a response from either yet, but i'm gonna continue to make the effort and see what might happen 🙂

Confused

A lot of the mentoring questions I've gotten are things veteran TeAm members take for granted. Things like:

what's a WU?
why is the A in TeAm capitalized?
why is it better to run the CLI rather than the GUI version?
how can I get more WUs out of my rig?
etc...

One thing I have tried to make sure I do is to direct new members to one of the TeAm SetiQs. There haven't been many issues with bandwidth at Berkeley recently but I don't want to see a new member get frustrated by a lack of uploading/downloading WUs and quit the project. I think this is a really important thing to mention to new members!

These are just some of the questions and ideas I've come up with since I started mentoring...

Thanks for the great response. I think we have enough for the time being but if anyone would really like to participate there is always room for more.

The current lineup of Mentors is as follows:

REM: Migroo is temporarily on leave. 😉

Nah, I'd classify that more as an old fart, humoring younger guy relationship😀

1st off, you have got to learn to be nice to people. 😛

You little whipper snapper. 😀

I can't commit to any individuals at this time, but I am of course available for anyone who wants to pick what little brains I have left. 😕

One important note though: I've never used SetiDriver - EVER! I use(d) a combination of SetiQueue and SetiSpy with the CLI - it just worked for me, so I didn't need to try anything else. I say "If it works, don't try to fix it." 🙂

I'll help if you want to add me to the list, just assign me folks on weekdays, since I'm not around much on weekends, and PMs might go for a couple of days without being responded to.

By the way, I'll probably be undergoing a name change shortly, so that I can sync my nick and my seti name, so make sure nobody panics, I'm not going anywhere.
