It's been a while since I've been running SETI but I still host one of the team webpages at http://hobbitt.worldkey.net/~seti.

I got the following email regarding the Planetary Society and some things they would like to do ON MONDAY (i.e. immediate response is required). Could somebody take care of this?

*********************************************************************
Email from Planetary Society below:
*********************************************************************

The e-mail address we had for your team leader bounced back. perhaps you could forward this e-mail to the team leader for us?

Thanks,

Susan

Dear SETI@home team leader,

SETI@home has reached a major milestone: its 5th anniversary. Thanks are due to you, as one of the nearly 5 million individuals and thousands of teams participating in the SETI@home network, for making this worldwide distributed computing project an early highlight of the 21st century.

To celebrate this anniversary and the momentous achievements of SETI@home, The Planetary Society is recognizing the extraordinary teams, like yours, that have helped make this possible. On Monday, May 17, 2004, we will publicly acknowledge in a press release and on our website at http://planetary.org, the top 10 teams in each category. We would also like to send you, on behalf of your team, a certificate recognizing your group as one of the top 10 Club SETI@home teams.

To properly recognize your team, please reply as soon as possible with the following information:

The full name of your team as well as the Team Leader's name and postal mailing address to which the certificate should be sent.

We hope to include quotes from many of the team leaders and information about their efforts in our press release. If you could please answer the following questions, it would help us greatly:

When did your team begin to process SETI@home data?
How many members do you have?
Are both home computers and work computers part of the search?
Any other pertinent information (for example, if your team has an unusual name, how was it selected?)
Why did you and the other team members decide to participate in SETI@home?
Does your team have an institutional commitment to the program?
Any additional comments or stories to relate regarding SETI@home?

Congratulations on your team's outstanding contribution to the search for extraterrestrial intelligence!

It's hard to believe that five years have passed since May 17, 1999, when The Planetary Society joined with David Anderson and Dan Werthimer, scientists from U.C. Berkeley, and their team to launch this extraordinary program -- a search for extraterrestrial intelligence that harnesses the computing power of personal computers around the world. Today, SETI@home serves as a model for distributed computing systems, and the technology developed for the project is being adapted for use by many other scientific research programs.

Again, thank you for your participation in SETI@home. And thank you, as well for your swift response to this e-mail.

Please reply to me at susan.lendroth@planetary.org or call me at 626-793-5100, Ext. 237.

Sincerely,

Susan Lendroth

1 vote for Smoke :)

Edit;
What I mean is, in the short time that I've been here, Smoke has seemed to be the biggest, most official leader. I can't speak for all the people who have maybe been around longer and held the position in the past. Thanks a bunch to all of you :)

Our team founder bailed on us long ago.
I think MGallik as well as a few others have founder rights. Maybe Assimilator1.
BTW, notice the link I still use in my signature? :)

I sent a PM to Smoke, Assimilator1, HB and MGallik pointing to this thread.
Someone should be here soon.

I just sent an email to Greg.

There are several "founders" at this moment, it would be nice to have a general "sit down" and work out just what to say in answer to those questions and discuss how this honor will be shared with the TeAm.

Thanks for the heads-up, Binky! :)

I think we can work out a response to the questions right here in this thread.

I know some of the answers ... others will have to chip in for some of them.

When did your team begin to process SETI@home data?

May 27, 1999

How many members do you have?

Currently we have 3,223 members.

Are both home computers and work computers part of the search?

Yes, our team has both home and work computers as part of the search.

Any other pertinent information (for example, if your team has an unusual name, how was it selected?)

Officially we are known as "TeAm AnandTech" but are referred to as the "TeAm" by not only ourselves but by other teams as well. The capitalization of the "A" in TeAm is a play on our team's sponsor, Anand Lal Shimpi and the AnandTech Website and Forums.

Why did you and the other team members decide to participate in SETI@home?

(Let's all chip in on this answer ;) )
We are an international team with a membership of many diverse backgrounds and skills. Many of us are true seekers of mankind's greatest question, "Are we alone?". Many others are interested primarily in the stats for the "thrill of victory and the agony of defeat". I believe all of us enjoy the camaraderie and "TeAm Spirit" that "TeAm AnandTech exemplifies.

Does your team have an institutional commitment to the program?

If this is asking if our team or team sponsor is making a direct financial contribution to the Seti At Home Project, I believe the answer is "no" but I am subject to correction on this point. Many of us are members and contributors to The Planetary Society and all of us have made great investments of our personal resources and time.

Any additional comments or stories to relate regarding SETI@home?

(Again, comments from all members would help fill in the answer to this question.)

Please make suggestions of what you think we should say. We can edit this until we feel it is ready for submission but should have it all together no later than Sunday afternoon.

We have been operating with a loosely formed group of "Founders". Over the years different individuals have been in effect "Acting Founder". When I joined the TeAm, our acting TeAm Leader was Hellburner. As you all know, I've been handling the duties lately and have used the title, "Membership Administrator". On any "serious" situation, we generally contact each other and get as much input as possible. I would be most proud to take physical possession of our TeAm's Certificate and to have it displayed on one or more of our team websites. If possible, we can try to get copies made for those that would be interested. :)

Another vote for Smoke :D

Never noticed the private message notice, but I did note a Binky posting

Got family commitments today, so can't do anything in the needed time frame.

I think Smoke is a logical choice, but I am a relative newcomer and do not know the history of the TeAm and who the stalwarts were, or are. I like the sharing idea and possible posting of the award on more than one TeAm web site, regardless who accepts the award.

Contratulations are due to the whole TeAm, old members and new.

We have team members who started crunching when SETI started. The team started shortly after. We were debating even starting a team, for fear of weakening the RC5 team. Vapor just went ahead and started it.

I started crunching Wed May 19 04:13:38 1999 UTC
A week later sounds like about the right time for the team.

"Any additional comments or stories to relate regarding SETI@home?"
Maybe something about "crack racks" or "The Warp Core"

Sorry I couldn't replie in time,I was busy in one way or another all day.
I rarely check out the forums over the weekend, but Sundays especially

I sent Susan an email (actually more than one) with our input. I have not received any communications from her or anyone else from the Planetary Society.

Rest assured when I do I will post it immediately. ;) :)

I just received a return email from Susan Lendroth. She said my submission was too late to make the write-up but that she would like to post my submission on their website. I'm not sure exactly what she means to do but I gave her permission.

I'm a little surprised that she claimed my submission was too late. I sent her two emails, one at 1:32 am on Sunday morning and a follow-up at 7:30 am on Sunday morning. The original message as posted by Binky did ask for an "immediate response" and I guess I was not quick enough.

I apologize for that as I thought my response within 13 hours of Binky's post would have been sufficient.

I think she liked my response by the tone of her email response so let's wait and see what develops.

Smoke...If it's not to late....I think special recognition to those that sacrificed there personal time, and through which, has amplified our team spirit. Ones that have quit the team for personal reasons, but have given of themselves unselfishly, should be mentioned as well.

We all know the Cry .........MORE MORE MORE!
