SETI: how much faster is a p3 800/133 than a 533/133?

i MIGHT be building a dually soon and i'm wondering which chip will be worth it.

dually won't help performance much at all, to my knowledge, seti won't take advantage of 2 CPU's so your supposed to run it twice when you have a dually, and considering it is so FSB dependent and you only have 1 FSB then you won't see too much of an improvement. I'm not too sure about how accurate this is, but if you go to hardware centlral you will be able to find out a lot of info about this.

fingers - yer right ;)

However, many people run it this way anyway. Its not 2x as long for each unit, but you DON'T get twice the throughput in terms of WU's. Some find it best to run S@H on one CPU, and RC5, OGR, Gamma Flux, or others on the other CPU (because all of those others aren't dependant upon the FSB)

And then there's the other folks like me whose herds consist almost entirely of the machines in their homes. And to keep from having lots of computers, I rackmount dual-cpu systems, and run two instances of SETI on each box. I'll wager I probably lose a little performance compared to using one dedicated system per SETI client, but I'm up to 38 WUs a day now, and I'm still accelerating!

yeah, i'd be running one instance of seti on each cpu. as for the fsb, just how much effect would that have? i doubt that there's THAT much info being transferred as to create a huge bottleneck.

i'm giving this to a friend who has a cable connection. she gets a free computer, and i get a server that's on 24/7 and crunches seti. the p3-533/133 costs $100 per, whereas the 800/133 costs over $200 per.

i'm gonna wait until intel releases the p4 and amd tries to stela their thunder by offering the processors at an even lower price. who knows, they (socket a mobos) might even support smp by then.

:)

The v3.0 client, due out any day now is far less FSB dependent. So, the dual boards will be a better choice than before.

I run one gui (2.7) and one cli (2.4) on my dual 550E's. This is faster than 2 cli's. I am averaging 6 WU's per day, using setiq. The dual setup is great.

well as of now, it will fill up your FSB with info, so there is a lot. I don't know too much about V 3.0 but from what HB says then maybe getting a dually is worth while because of the decreased dependency of the FSB.

I would say the 800EB since the new 3.0 clients should be a lot less FSB dependent, like HB said.
