SETI : How do I connect automatically whenever needed?

I have roadrunner here at home and today while I was at work, my home computer completed a WU and downloaded another one...no problem there. The computer at my work had no internet connection, but my boss didn't object to me installing a free ISP (the Kmart one "Blue light???&quot😉 and putting SETI on there. So, since this is a dial up connection, I would like it to connect, upload the completed WU, download another, and sign off...even if I'm not there. The computer runs 24/7. It is on Win98. I went into the internet options in the control panel and under the connections tab, if I select always dial my default connection, it wants to sign on immediately. That isn't what I had in mind. Is there any way to make it sign on only when it needs to download another WU? I changed it back to never dial a connection, so how do I do this manually when I go into work tomorrow? After work I stopped by my Dad's house and put SETI on his computer which is also running 24/7, but his shares a phone line with his voice line. Is it better off to leave his at ask me before connecting to the internet? I assume so.

Also, thanks to all for the warm welcome. It's nice to feel welcome as a newbie...not all places are like that 🙂

Hi SpookyFish,

<< . Is it better off to leave his at ask me before connecting to the internet? >>

I don't think so as it will bring up a box asking you if you want to connect to the Internet. If he isn't around to respond it will sit until he sees it. For a dialup I prefer SetiQ as it will dial once a day at a time you prefer. I have mine dialup at 3:30 AM while I am sleeping and then it will not conflict with someone using the telephone. But, you need to set your IE properties to "Always dial my default connect"

Good luck and welcome to the TeAm!

Sorry, I don't have time to find the SetiQ link as I just got paged.

Ah yes, SETI Queue looks like what I need. Thanks for the quick response.

innocuni, I checked out SETIDriver, but it says it must use the CLI client, and I am running GUI. Thanks for your quick response also.

hmm...I am amazed that you people can answer my questions that I can barely phrase. You'll have to teach me that trick 😉

Do you have the graphics turned on for the GUI? They will slow the client down over 50%. If you need to use the GUI, make sure you set the screensaver properties to go to blank screen mode within 1-5 minutes so it isn't so slow. Or, you could just switch to the CLI and SETI Driver, because SETI Driver will hide the CLI automatically. You could use SETIQ too if that does more of what you need. 🙂

Every morning, when I wake up, I thank god if I won't have to use DOS that day. Point and click, baby, that's the way I like it. Uh huh. I might be tempted to try the CLI if my SETI times are lower. Tell me more. I have the screen set to go blank in 1 minute.

The CLI is really just a Dos looking box.

What it is, is a faceless client that does the same processes as the GUI, just no pretty pictures to watch. Just download the .exe and put it in a file (ie: C://Seti) the make a short cut to your desktop and click and run. The first time it will ask if you 1) are a new user or 2) if you have an account (your user email addy), after that it just churns out the WU's by the boatload🙂.

There are third party add-ons to monitor the CLI and various WU caching proggys also so you never run out of WU's.
