SETI@Home question.

How do you get more out of the SETI client?

I have a AMD K6-2 500Mhz chip with 256mbs of ram and while I am unpacking from my move my computer is running only AIM, DMHKey(Diamond video card) and Black Ice in the background and it is taking about 5 hours to do ten percent of a data block.

I want to do more. :|

I think the most recent version has AMD optimizations, so that may help.

Turning the graphics off helps a great deal.

I'd need to know if you're running it in screensaver mode or not.

If in screensaver mode, turn the screensaver on quickly and then blank the screen quickly (one minute or so).

K6-2's do fairly badly at SETI ,their weak FPU & their slow L2 cache gives poor WU times.
If you have a 1Mb L2 cache & RAM @ CAS2 then you could get WU times of around 14-16 hrs(which is OK) ,other wise you could see WU times of 22-24hrs 🙁 ,as a machine working for me was doing.

BTW you need to do at least 5WU's to get a proper idea of WU times.
The biggest single tweak you should do is as the others say ,enable blank screen in the screen saver settings & set it to less than 5 mins

Are you a member of a team ?

Assimilator1,

Thanks for the info about my particular chip.No I am not a member of a team.Like I said I just downloaded it last night. It is only runnig on this machine while I am unpacking.

Once I have everything set up I am going to be building at least two more machines. At least one of them will be an Athlon hopefully a 1 gig chip.

Hellburner,

Thanks for the link.

Yakko I think you still need to set the screen to go blank on the screensaver even if power managment is turning the monitor off. From my understanding turning off the monitor doesn't help bring the times down because the screen saver is still using cpu cycles to draw the graphics even though they are not being displayed unless you tell the screensaver to go blank. I may be wrong on this if I am someone please correct me!!🙂

blade_47,

I have no screensaver at all set.The monitor just goes off.I would think that since the computer is turning it off that it would also stop the usage of cpu cycles. Then again this is a windoze machine.

SETI speed tweak:

Set it as an "active screen saver", then under "settings" check the blank screen option, and set the time to less than 5 minutes(recommended 1 minute) till blank.

This is what they were explaining, it frees the processes from having to do the graphics also. Setting the monitor power-saving feature has NO effect of your process speed.

Been browsing through these posts, tryin to figure out which one i plan on adding my systems too. SETI looks the coolest, but as was explained already watching the pretty graphics makes it slower. RC5 seemed boring(so hard to tell it's even working), but perhaps i missed some neat way to do it. Those are the only ones i having tried so far. Yes, i will join team anand as soon as i figure out which one/ones i plan on doing.

If you have Seti to process all the time as well as not having it setup to be a screen saver, that is about the best you can do. My K62-350 does a WU in about 19 hours I think with GUI 2.70.

Ben98SentraSE,

Could you check your GUI version number again please?

I got version 2.04 off the site so if you have a newer version where the hell did you get it? Right now I am 13 hours in and only 31% done.

Have changed it to be a blank screensaver. Thanks for the tips.

Edit

Make was going to change to a blank but I don't have that as an option.

Guys, I don't think he's using the SETI screen saver. He just changed to a blank screen saver, but no screen saver, "(none)", would work just as well. That's the way I was doing it when running the 2.7 GUI. 🙂

Yakko, thanks to TuffGuy, you can try V2.70, here: http://kirra.acool.net/seti/setiathome_win_2_70.exe Since this is an unauthorized copy of a beta, the usual warnings apply. It may be faster for you, but I found the decreased stability of Windows outweighed the speed increase.

Hi Yakko,

As a fellow K6 user I feel like I can give some good input here. I have a k6-3 450 that has been turning in consistent 11.5-12 hr wu's for me using the cmdline version. You can download it from berkeley as "setiathome-2.4.i386-winnt-cmdline. This will also work in Win98. I tried the 2.70 gui and got some really fast times approaching 10 hours, but would occaisionally get one that would take +24 hours, so I decided that the consistent 12 hours was the way to go. The cmdline doesn't show you what it is doing and I don't have a constant internet connection anymore, so I am using both Setispy and SetiQ. All the links are on the team page. When I used the normal Gui my times averaged 14-16 hours like assimilator stated. Let us know if you have any specific questions. 🙂

artemedes,

Thanks for the tip about the ommadn line.Right now it is at 15 hours and I am only at 38% but I have noticed that it is going a little faster than when I started.

Is that 15hours with the GUI? 2.70? Yah, you will get slooooow times with 2.70, but you will also get fast ones too. All in All I had overall consistent and faster times with the command line. You may want to give it a whirl. You'd have either finished a WU in under 15 hours or been real close to finishing. When I first started doing seti I was happy with 14 hours, but then the command line opened my eyes and allowed me to get a solid 2 WUs a day.

It is version 2.04.As for the command line version I went to download it but none of the links specificly say windoze.Which one do I want?

Ok, on this page:

http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/unix.html

download the file called "i386-winnt-cmdline.exe" this works on win9X too. It has no graphics, so you'll probably want some kind of viewer. I am happiest with setispy. If you do not have a constant internet connection you'll also want to run setiq. Both of these programs have links on our team page, and there is a setiq faq on there too (helped me alot!). Speaking of teams, have you joined Team Anandtech 🙂🙂🙂? Check this site out for good info:

http://hobbitt.worldkey.net/~seti/

I just emailed you the seti command line client. You use the same one for both NT and Win98 so that's why it says NT. If you still want to download it from the seti site just look for the name of the one I sent you in there list of downloads.

Good luck.🙂

yakko,

hi there...

I have two AMD machines..

K6-2-350 (oc 4 x 100)
1mb Mobo
Old 1Gb hard drive
64Mb PC100 ram.
2.4 GUI SETI client

Averages 16 Hours /WU

K6-2-500 (oc 5 x 105)
500Kb mobo
ATA-33 hard drive
64MB PC100 ram
2.4 GUI SETI client

Averages 15 Hours /WU.

Your times should definitley be a lot faster even without the cmdline client.

good luck,

Col

Ass1..

It's the GUI - blank screen, 0 mins.....

If you look at the second machine, it should be way faster then the first, it's the crappy L2 cache (500K) that kills it....

🙂

Col.

Hehe ,thats pretty good actually ,an X drone I had ,a K6-2 500 128Mb RAM that was doing WU's in 22-24 hrs !🙁 ,& that was with blank screen enabled!:Q

BTW it's Assim1 😛 😉
