SETI@Home: Problems.....

No... there is no problem with the program. (I don't think) I just ran it. i know I just started with you all SETI ppl but I was running it on this box (first one on my rig list) and it just caused lots of hang problems. I went back to RC5 and I have not had a problem since. Sorry guys. I have to go back to RC5. But when I do get a decent computer... I will run SETI on it. You all are always known as my friends like everyone else on the DC forums.

The system isn't letting me look at your 'rigs' page for some reason. How much memory is in that computer? If it only has 32MB, then you don't want to run SETI on it if it will ever be used for anything else. If it has 64MB, you should be OK as long as it's not used for anything intensive. Either of these situations could result in the crashes you have described. (My work system only has 64MB of ram 🙁 and it crashes occasionally if I have SETI running and I try to run any large program...) If it has 128MB or more, it should be fine pretty much no matter what you do with it...

Well, different programs stress CPUs in different ways. For instance, I have a dualeron at home that is rock stable under RC5 overclocked to 520MHz on each chip. But if I run OGR on that machine, it locks after a little while unless I back it down to 500 MHz on each chip.

So it may be that SETI just stresses your CPU in a way it doesn't like (for instance, RC5 is integer intensive, while SETI is very floating point intensive. Two different sections of the chip).

I think Jhutch may have hit the nail on the head ,ref RC5 using different parts of your CPU

BTW Wolfie ,the link you have provided for your rigs is YOUR edit link! lol
( I wanted to add a 1.4GHz Tbird to your rigs but I didn't have the password! 😉

Seti is also alot more memory intensive. It could possible be the ram can't take the stress. However I agree that what JHutch said is probably right.🙂
