btw, finally got the zalman on the Q9450, I couldn't stand looking at that pathetic stock cooler stuck at 3.0. now running at 3.4 in a cold room with (ambient is 6c lower than my house since I took this rig to work) with load temps of 72/70/63/72. I guess I'll have to put the new-to-me tuniq on when I get home on saturday. No reast for the weary!

Those are rather high load temps not to mention the rather wide temp spread between cores, have you put enough HS paste on?
I had the problem of wide temp spreads between cores on my quad too, though the main problem with my setup is the HSF base not being flat, adding more HS paste improved temps on the hottest cores a lot (see ICD7 test thread).
 
I'm still using the zalman right now, and it is clocked at 3.4 so...meh. Also, that is using coretemp and it's stupid 105c tj max, real temp has them 10c lower and speedfan has them 5c lower. I *think* that realtemp is more accurate but it doesn't really matter since the determining statistic is delta to tj max. I'm at 30 or more on all 4 cores with that, which is equivalent to 65c on a q6600, so I'm pretty confident that I'm ok with these temps. I have a tuniq waiting at home to install with this cpu, I'm confident that I'll be able to get a better OC and better temps once that guy is installed. Plus I can bust out the sandpaper...
 
I thought that coretemp was the most accurate, but I don't have proof of that, does anyone? I do know though that speedfan (I've got v4.33) doesn't measure temps properly, I have to applie a corrector, plus most of the time it uses the temp from 1 core for all 4.😕 [edit] I see v4.34 is out now & it apparently fixes these 2 issues.🙂

Using coretemp my delta to Tjmax is 50-55C running DPAD. Only clocked at 3GHz atm, will probably try for more again soon now that I've managed to get the 2 'hot cores' temps down.🙂

Let us know what temps & o/c you get with the new cooler.🙂
 
coretemp, speedfan, and realtemp all use the same sensor to determine delta to tjunction max. however, intel doesn't tell anybody what tjunction IS so they all have to guess at tjunction. all 3 of them have a different guess: realtemp thinks it's 95, speedfan thinks it's 100, and coretemp thinks it's 105. I have no idea why intel won't release tjunction info. It is very annoying, however.
 
With the new version of speedfan I now find that coretemp & speedfan give the same reading.:thumbsup:

Isn't 'tjunction' the temp at which the CPU starts to throttle itself? ,in which case it should be easy to find out what temp that is, just run Prime 95, a realtime clock speed measurer & disconnect the fan, then record what temp it throttles at! ,I volunteer you to try it😛😉

speedfan is 5c higher than realtemp and 5c lower than coretemp for me on my 45nm quads, not sure what it does for other cpus.

intel doesn't post the tjunction max on core-based cpus. Not sure why, they just don't. It doesn't matter anyway, since delta to tjunction is the important part.
