I have alot of servers I don't know what to do with.

My hosting company has some good links and alot of open rack space.

I'm googling this stuff now, but I'm sure ATOT here has alot of experienced users in this project.

I'm wondering if I can setup a Unix based Virtual server that can be deployed on a bunch of spare servers to help out with the SETI project.

I have servers ranging from p3 500mhz with 512mb of ram, all the way up to P4 3.0Ghz servers with 2GB..

I wondering if I can just put them all on racks and have them run a vm to help with SETI until I decide I have a better use for them.

I could probably put 20 servers to use.

Anybody have any input or good ideas for this?

I work at a datacenter.

One floor below this datacenter is a non profit Technology business incubator.

A customer of the datacenter decommissioned about 90 servers after they virtualized them all.

Since they are from Canada and the datacenter is in the US, it was difficult for them to try and part them out, sell them whole, or do anything other than just "dump" them somewhere. Most of the servers were untested and going through them would have cost more in labor than what they thought they were worth.

I also have a startup company working out of the Incubator, and my contact with the Canadian company knew that I needed some servers. He literally said "take them all"

After sorting through them, I have about 45 servers, 30 being P4 2.0ghz and above. I'm short on ram, so I'm going to spend about $200 buying 512MB/1GB ddr333 or better ram sticks to max each machine out.

At the datacenter, we have alot of unused space (about 35 racks at least out of 400) and we can route non critical traffic across our really cheap backup link. I'm still trying to figure out how much bandwidth per server we would need, but I can easily get a T1's worth of bandwidth for less than $50 per month.

Are these your servers? They are assuming you are talking about installing the software on 20 work owned servers you might manage.

McOwen got in some legal trouble for that. It's how he was born.
