We are currently in the middle of a server outage that started at 17:45 UTC. We hope to be back on line about 2 hours from now (19:45 UTC). Chances are good that it may be much sooner than that. If we need more time, this message will be updated.

The outage is to swap our current BOINC database server with a more powerful system. The big hope is that several problems (inability to keep up with work demands, slow web site, etc.) will disappear when we turn everything back on.

Hello - just a quick note (we're still busy observing things around here). But the new database server is up and running. Notice anything different?

FYI, the old database server was *still* doing its garbage collection when we made the switch just now.

It could just be me but the Accounts Data pages, the pages that show your computers and stats, seem to load much faster 🙂

We have moved the primary database service over to the the new server. Everything is looking good at this point. The new machine is currently very under utilized which is good - we are going to grow a lot!

The new system consists of a Sun v40z opteron with 2 1.8GHz processors and 8GB RAM, connected to a Sun 3510 fibre channel storage array. The latter was donated by Sun. As the needs of the project increase we can add 2 additional CPUs and take RAM up to 32GB.

The old database server is now a replica that will be used for backups and administrative queries.
