Hey guys,

if you don't know what SETI is go here PLEASE!! we need you on the team:
Team Anandtech Seti

Ok, now down to business,
I have a Duron 1 gig with 128 megs ram under Win98SE, and my block completion times look like poo to me. I avg. about 34 CPU hours for one block? Is this normal? I feel like less of a man when I look at DanSTP's 7 hr 18 min. crunch time (that was just from the top, I'm sure there are better). What setups are these guys running? Am I still a man if I take 34 hours?? :) hehe

My PIII 700@933 with 256mg Crucial will do a unit in 5-6 hours. Used to do them in 3-4 with V3. :(

And my Wifes 550Katmai will do a unit in the 8-10 hour range. Something has to be wrong with your set-up. Do you run the GUI or text only client? Text client is much faster.

As far as being a man, as long as you run the program that's enough for me....

The block completion times are given in "CPU hours", which is just a different measurment. I looked the site, but the information I don't know is CPU or real hours, or even if its accurate entirely, so I wanted to get some direct feedback with people on the new version, etc.

I see an average CPU time per WU and a total CPU hours. Total CPU time refers to the ammount of time you have been running SETI, I think

So the more PC you have running the more total CPU time you will have.

Let me go find my stats... My Stats.

So what are you looking at?

first of all, I greatly appreciate you doing this, thankyou kindly

I've looked at my times, and I seriously doubt that CPU time = realtime. because I can complete 1.5 a day, and each work unit I complete is 34 hours.

Edit: though I could be mistaken

JimmyEatWorld, the BIG Seti@Home gurus hang in The Distributed Computing Forum, those will be sure to answer your questions :D

Other than that ... if you do 1.5WUs in 24 hours there definitly is something wrong, sounds to me like you're using the "screensaver client" and like to look at the pretty graphics a little too much, if you know what I mean ;) It might also be some kind of powersaving, or a program like FindFast (damn M$ and their officeseries) that is eating your CPU cycles.

If you don't have any powersaving issues or other programs that are sucking up your CPU-cycles try enabling the "blank screen" option in the S@H screen saver and set the timer to something like < 5 minutes. Also enabling the always run option can be a great idea to really get those WUs churned out fast. Altho' as the ultimate sollution there is only one way to go, and that is the "Command Line Client" and setidriver or setiQ ;)

With love and respect your fellow TA member

I have read on the page where you download SETI Spy from just what CPU time is but I don't exactly remember it all.

I just looked at the SETI Spy page and didn't find anything. I'm almost positive that's where I read about it. Go check it out.

My Duron 800@800 does one in about 11 hours but that is when I am using the pc at the same time. My old K6-2 500 @ 500 had really long times on a work unit that was caused by the processor being slightly burned.

Assuming your using the pretty graphics version (like me) I've found it makes a big difference if you set SETI screensaver to go to blank screen very quickly (right click on desktop, go to Properties/Screen Saver/Settings.

I have a SETI question-I originally set it up several ISPs ago. My email address with SETI is now bad & I have no idea what my password is. Any ideas how to find out? I have 750+ wu done, so don't want to start new account.
