Hello TeAm Enterprise 🙂
Well, the final days of Seti-Classic have arrived. The change-over to BOINC (see the e-mail I just received from SETI below) has now begun in earnest. SETI as we have known it will be gone.
Some could say we have wasted our time these last four to five years for it is true we have not found evidence of a single Extra-Terrestrial. But we must all remember that the search is a "scientific" undertaking. The road to scientific discoveries are littered with failed attempts, wrong turns, and dead-end streets but each failure narrows the search. We build upon our experiences. We try new things. We move on. We persevere.
I want to thank you for your participation. The team to which we belong, TeAm AnandTech, has ended Seti-Classic as the #5 major team in the world. Over the course of the project TeAm AnandTech has had 3,342 contributing participants. Many of those participants are made up of many individuals like our TeAm Enterprise. The final statistical standings will not be ready for awhile. The administrator's of SETI have promised to go through the final statistics and eliminate once more and forever those accounts that never really contributed to the science but were nothing more than vandals and cheats. When the scum are finally removed I will proudly report back to you on our "real" final standings. 😉
The replacement for Seti-Classic is BOINC (again, see below). This new platform will move distributed computing into the 21st century. We now have the capacity to work not only upon finding proof of extra-terrestrial life but other projects of a more immediate nature. As many of you know, my precious 4 year old granddaughter, Maegan has just been diagnosed with cancer. I personally feel the need to work on projects that will help produce cures from disease and infections. TeAm Enterprise will carry on and I cordially invite you continue the fight. Our emphasis will be on the project http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/. Captain Crazee and I have already begun the project and we are off to a fine start. With participation from you and the "forces" we have within our control we expect to be one of the dominant "mini-teams" in the world. This will provide great benefit in the field of medicine and should be a lot of fun too. 😀
I will follow-up this e-mail with another giving you specific instructions on how to get BOINC installed and running on your computer.
I want to wish each of you a Happy Thanksgiving.
For TeAm Enterprise,
Captain Smoke
Captain Crazee

SETI@home completes the switch to BOINC
----------------------------------------------------
SETI@home has completed its transition to BOINC (Berkeley Open Infrastructure
for Network Computing). BOINC, developed at U.C. Berkeley, is a framework for
volunteer computing projects like SETI@home.
Switching your computer to the new "SETI@home/BOINC" is easy. Visit
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu for instructions. We'll be shutting down the
"SETI@home Classic" project on December 15. The workunit totals of users and
teams will be frozen at that point, and the final totals will be available on
the web.
Scientists at other universities are using BOINC to create volunteer computing
projects in areas like molecular biology, high-energy physics, and climate
change study. See http://boinc.berkeley.edu for more information. BOINC lets
you donate computer time to multiple causes, divided up however you want. For
example, your PC could spend 40% of its time searching for extraterrestrial
life (SETI@home), 30% studying climate change (http://climateprediction.net),
and 30% studying protein folding, design and docking (Rosetta@home:
http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/).
You can run SETI@home 100% of the time if you want. But we strongly encourage
you to participate in other projects. Doing so ensures that when SETI@home is
down or has no work, your computer stays busy helping other researchers.
Support SETI@home
----------------------------------------------------
SETI@home is increasingly reliant on individual donations. Without the support
of individuals like you the project will not be able to continue. We urge all
SETI@home participants to make a yearly donation to keep the project going:
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/donate.php
----------------------------------------------------
Thanks again for your participation in SETI@home.
The SETI@home Team
