Alright - I've had a downed cruncher for a while and can't seem to fix it. It won't install an OS. I tried everything, flashed bios, blah blah blah. I've now pronounced it officially maimed.
So what I'm looking for is a bootable disk that will run SETI on my LAN but I need to be able to set the IP instead of having to use DHCP(unless you guys want me to take down my setiQ ;) ) The only things I can find all require DHCP :(

I found a bunch here and this tulip one for the LNE100tx loads on the downed machine but seti fails because I don't use DHCP on my LAN.

Help?

Buy a router... ummm, search the hot deal threads get one for free.. :) I just got a 4 port netgear wireles.

Anyway. Plug in your switch/hub whatever you got into your router, Turn on DHCP. Problem solved. Too Cheap? well, can't use all your computers for seti? Make one a server and turn on DHCP that way.

Good Luck

Already have a router ;) I have DSL but I like to have "set" IPs for my machines because...well because I do;) and it's easier to route port specific traffic(ie. setiQ;) ) I suppose I could buy a cheap router and stick it on the LAN but that seems like it is too much work and hardware and $ for just one little machine:) I know there has to be a diskless setup out there that uses set IPs :p

Oh, I suppose I could use my 100MB zip drive if someone knows of a small install that would work? EDIT - I also have a 2GB ditto drive if that is bootable(i just inherited it and have never used a ditto drive).

Anyone?

Yu can turn on DHCP, and then let the other computers have static IPs. DHCP can be used in a network along with tatic IPs, it's happening here at work :)

Just set the range on the router for DHCP to be above the numbers you have already manually assigned (for example, set it to 192.168.0.50 to 192.168.0.60), then anything that needs DHCP addresses, will get it, and the rest of your machines will still use the statically assigned IPs in the range below that :)

*Hope that made sense to you! ;)*

I think this one will let you set the IP. I used this one alot but don't have it running right now so I can't check it.

Looks like it'll do the trick - thanks :D

Confused - I had thought of trying that but i looked around in the router but i didn't mess with anything because I don't have the time to rewrite my whole router if I screw something up;) I have WAY too many port forwards and other routing things set and I don't think I could remember them all if I hosed the router up:p (cisco 678 DSL modem if you were wondering)

onebadv6 - is there a way I can check to make sure that it automatically loads my user_info? Does it save my -proxy settings after a reboot? I followed the directions and it is up and running but I'm not sure it is really working:p
How does one "look" at a file using this? not telnet - directly on the machine.

TIA

just hit it with your web browser. It has a web page with all the info. Reboot is and allways been a pain. The autocrunch does work on some machines but you still lose your work unit as everything is stored in ram. As far as the proxy info I don't believe that is stored but you just need to telnet over and restart the process with the proxy information if you ever do a reboot.

The web page doesn't have the user info :( but the more i think about it it would have to be mine since it doesn't keep asking me for it and I deleted the anon one they had packaged with the image.
I guess i'll just have to deal with the reboots, but i'm not sure how to get it to go through my proxy once it reboots. Do i stop the auto started client? if so, how? the web interface doesn't seem to work to stop it:p

oh well, atleast it is crunching.

Anyone know how the speed of this compares to a Win (2k, XP) based PC? Deciding if I may want to add a few nodes to the rack cheaply without HD's or try to find a few 3 to 5 GB drives to throw them on. Looking at a few boards, chips, etc...must get more..more..more! :Q

I NEED MORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

er....WE! :p

I suppose you might gain a few mins because it doesn't have the overhead of winblows. But you might also loose that extra time because it doesn't cache any work units and looses half done ones if the machine goes down.

Horse a piece, but if you don't have the extra winblow liscense lying around then it might be the way to go.

I used the link to freesco.org to get their floppy, then used mv2hd to copy it to a bunch of win98 formatted little bitty hard drives I had laying around. Then you can boot back to DOS and add directories where needed and copy the linux seti distro over to the hard drive.

Now I dont lose a partial WU when the power drops, I just need to get home long enough to find out why there is no power in my garage.
I moved almost all my units into the garage before I left on this last trip. My wife says the lights wont come on in the garage anymore!

Only 2 more weeks left on this trip! Leaving Branson in the morning headed for MS and LA.
