Seti BOINC and Seti Classic

sorry if repost, searched for bionic

me

seti's site says something about converting accounts? would someone mind bringing me up to speed? wtf are they talking about?

From what I understand seti boinc already has most seti classic users in their database, you just need to activate your account. You will keep the same username as your seti classic account and in your stats it will have your seti classic completed wus, at the moment its the amount you had in may 2004, but when seti classic ends they will update it to your final amount of completed wus.

I worked this up some time ago. It may still be valid ... haven't checked in a while. I'd say give it a go. 😉

SETI - BOINC*

1a. If you are listed on the Seti-Classic Roster prior to 14 May 2004, use the following link to get Seti-BOINC running on your computer(s):

Activate your transferred Seti-Classic account

1b. If you are a new SETI participant, use the following link to get Seti-BOINC running on your computer(s):

Create an Account

2. You will receive a confirming email giving you the password you will need to complete the Seti-BOINC installation.

2a. Make sure you're using an active email-address, you must also activate the account before starting to crunch. Just paste the account-key from the email and hit "activate account".

3. Preferences: If you're already running another BOINC-project besides seti@home, choose the 2nd link. Otherwise, the 1st link "This is my first BOINC project". For most the default settings are good enough. After you "ok" the preferences, you're automagically transported to the... download page:

Download the BOINC software program suitable for your system <-- Here's the link in case you ever need it. 😉

4. Open the program and let it proceed automatically to install BOINC on your computer.

5. After the program has installed you should get a screen asking you which program you wish to attach to the BOINC program. The installation package is a little weak at this point and could lead to confusion on what to enter. Eventually there will be more and more PROJECTS that you can "attach" to your BOINC engine.

5a. If you are using a PROXY, navigate the BOINC interface to "Settings/Proxy Server ..." and follow the directions there. Make sure you do this before proceeding any further because otherwise you won't be able to connect to complete the installation.

5b. Since this instruction set is for the SETI project, enter the following for the projects web address:
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu <---Copy and paste this url ... it shows up as a link in our forum but you should only copy and paste it in the appropriate spot.

5c. Obviously, you would enter the BOINC PASSWORD referred to in step #2.

6. Things should go automatically from this point on. If you are running a hyper-threaded CPU or a multiple CPU system you should check to see if in the WORK area (see the tab at the top of the BOINC INTERFACE) if there is a Work Unit being processed for each of your processors (2 for hyper-threaded CPU systems).

6a. The 1st connection will use client-defaults, so if you've changed the cache-settings you will be, in effect, immediately asking for more Work Units. You may not get enough Work Units for multi-cpus during this initial download. Just let the client run for about 10 minutes when it will automatically ask for more Work Units.

7. If everything is working as it should, you'll probably (on NT4 & later) want to let BOINC run as service. To do this, exit the BOINC-gui and open up a cmd-prompt. Navigate to the boinc-directory. You could use the following string to get there more quickly:
cd "c:\program files\boinc" (if you installed BOINC in the default location)

Once there type in: boinc_cli.exe -install and hit the ENTER key.

If you're running XP, you probably also need to go into service-control and change the account BOINC to run as "localsystem".
Now start the service, or reboot.

v3.20 fixed the service-bug.

8. The last and most important step for our New TeAm Mates is to now Join TeAm AnandTech

*This is a work in progress and will be updated, amended, corrected at time goes by. If you think there are things to be corrected, added, or deleted please post right in this thread and I'll attempt to fix them ASAP. 🙂

You don't have to change to boinc yet if you don't want to. Boinc is the new SETI that will replace the current one. If you like, you can still carry on the way you are now like the most of us, or if you wanna switch, go with Smoke's links! 😉

Plz ask if you wanna know more! 😀

Nice piece of work Smoke! 😀

Hmm, things have changed a little since this message was last updated, and atleast service-install will be different then 4.2x is released.
But as long as seti is down can't really check for any changes...

But, the download-link have atleast changed, all client-downloads is now from
http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php

RD, I just fixed the DOWNLOAD link. Let me know if there are other parts that are out of date. 😉
