seti bogging screensaver?

Ok this may sound stupid but I actually like to see my screensaver 🙂 When I was running UD or rc5 client I could run my openGL screensaver at the same time with no problems at all, but seti for some reason seems to not let it take priority and makes the pc hang for 10 seconds while the ss tries going on or off. I know it takes up some cpu power, but it runs terrible with seti...choppy 🙁

any ideas? is there a way to set priority on the ss? im using win xp, with seti command line/seti driver.

Its best not to run a screensaver with Seti (or blank screensaver). If you are not using the computer flip the monitor off or set it to power off the screen after 15 min.

The screensaver takes power to render and that sloooows Seti down. That is why people here run the CLI because the GUI takes away from the speed at processing Seti due to having to render the graphics.

If your seti performance is important to you then either use the power button on your monitor or use the blank screen saver.

Which openGL screen saver are you using, and which version of SETI? You should be able to run the client version of SETI with any OpenGL screensaver without any trouble (at least there's no trouble on my system with 3D pipes). You can try the screen saver duplexer that I wrote a few weeks ago. It allows you to run any executable file (hidden) and most screen savers at the same time.
The installation file can be downloaded from:

Screen saver duplexer

By default the screen saver is called "BlankScreen2", but you can rename the SCR file to whatever you want to call it. It works well with the SETI client - I've never tried the SETI GUI appllication with it. Just select this screen saver and hit the settings button to select the executable file and screen saver to run at the same time.

Just to let you know, OpenGL screensavers take a lot of CPU time. So even when the screensaver was running with the DNet client, the DNet client probably wasn't getting much of anything done. 🙁

As a compromise, if you really like watching your screensaver (who doesn't now and then? 😉) try using a screensaver that will go to a blank screen after a set period of time, essentially turning off the screensaver and allowing SETI to have all of the CPU cycles.
