seti, an unfortunate waste

why is seti so popular. the project simply scans the sky 3 or 4 times a day instead of once. other disributed projects aim to cure alzheimer's, mad cow , ALS, and parkinson's disease. or refine important alogorithoms and every wu is contributing something unlike seti which it is a know fact that nothing has been acomplisted. i am sure i will get flame becuase so may seem to have made it a way of life. but come on people lets to something of value with are cpu cycles. yes i do belive in life on other planets, but it will never be found scaning radio waves a thousand times over.
 
every once in a while this sort of question pops up and we all decided we'd be better off not attacking one another's chosen projects.
 
Well if you would of thought this asinine argument out most people here have multiple computers...... soooo.... it could be said some of them run multiple distributed computing projects....i run United Agent search for Cancer and Seti.....so I find your comment rather ridiculous..think of this as a hobby everyone has their hobby...i dislike the United agent for all the crap they put into the client if you know of another client for cancer research that is not a gui hog then by all means please enlighten me

Ah yes, so many projects, so many computers, so little time. A question of it coming down to picking a project just like you pick a screensaver. Someday there may be a pull down menu where you simply pick the project you would like any particular machine working on whatever particular project at that time of choice. Anything is better tahn the CPU's sitting ide and doing nothing like Cars at a red light.

Some people feel that the NASA space program is a big waste time and money too. But there have been hundreds, if not thousands of medical, commercial, and recreational products/services that have been derived or spun off of the efforts of the space program. While SETI in your opinion seems to be a waste, it has helped pioneer a new way of thinking about interconnected PCs. many of the projects you mention are in existance because SETI proved the distributed computing model, and made people think about using their PC for something other than surfing.

As others have said, check out some of the other Team Anandtech projects, lurk around the forums, and if you are so inclined, you are most welcome to join Team Anandtech in the project(s) of your choosing. 🙂

And jevans - I can understand your question and have asked myself questions along those same lines, but I always come up with the same answer......"What if...." 😉 Wouldn't all of our lives be affected if we "found" aliens? Maybe they could help us cure cancers and alot more! 😀 Again this is all a "What if" and only MY opinion 😉😀 (<-- Yes, some people think I'm nuts 😛😕 ) BTW jevans I do Folding@Home also so maybe I'm only 90% nuts 😛

What the others have said.. if nothing else, S@H is THE PROJECT that showed Distributed Computing could succeed with the public/masses and be a viable way of running a project, ANY PROJECT!

You want to find a cure for cancer, be my guest, but please don't go out of your way to be an @sshole and attack people's choices to run other projects, whether you think them worthwhile or not! :|
 
Perhaps the aliens we find will already know how to cure ALL those medical problems you listed.

Sure seems like a waste not to try.

I really get tired of people coming in saying Seti has accomplished nothing when it is very obvious they have done NO reading on the project! Please before you come in and make a post judging any project, please do some research. If you had checked it out you would have found these links:

It might help if you understood the project better. The project is not trying to find ET directly through our analysis of the Work Units. They are trying to find the most likely candidates for the telescope in Arecibo to examine for longer periods of time to see if there are Alien signals or not.

So please read through this information before coming in and saying that Seti does nothing!
 
I run Seti because if we find some little green men, they will hopefully have a cure for cancer, along with everything else that shortens the lifespan on humans.

So we are really doing the same thing.

the thing I love most about these forms is the wonderful opinions of other people. thats why I made the post. To get others intellegent views like the one above. I am sorry if I may have come off as attack seti.

to the diamand member. I think making personal infomation or nationality public would do anything but create bias, or in your case give you something to attack me with.

If you were to check our TeAm listing you will find that our team is made up of members who reside all over the world! So, how could we use that against you? His point was your English. He would be more willing to forgive your mistakes if he knew that you are not from an English speaking country.
 
I see we have a jevans already doing FaH for TeAm Anandtech, is this you? I'm glad that you're doing something with your spare cpu cycles than just surfing the net or playing solitare. Unfortunately, as you're seeing, we've had posts along the same line as your's before and the firestorm that resulted discouraged many people from participating in a DC project, which is why you're getting some of the responses from my teammates that you're getting. Discussion of the merits of the various projects is tolerated as long as each person's choice is respected, out-right attack is NOT. What makes this forum so great is that we support all the various DC programs as we're a group of people who would rather use our spare cycles ( no matter what the project ) rather than let them go to waste. As has been pointed out, no matter what the project, it ends up benefitting all of humanity in one form or another, every time. Plus, we just like a good race no matter what the opportunity 🙂

Um, exactly how else were those of us running SETI supposed to take this: "seti, an unfortunate waste"?

You attacked the SETI project by questioning it's validity (of which Crazee has given several examples) and you questioned the reasons why those who choose to participate in the project do so. You are wrong on both points.

When a Junior Member with no profile and Instant Messaging disabled comes in here and attacks the project I've been running for over 3 years you can pretty much expect me to be a little pi$$ed. This forum is made up of members from around the world and AFAIK a member's nationality never comes up in anything other than friendly conversation. In fact, the current #1 producing member(s) of this team, CyGoR & Cobra, are from the Netherlands and a great couple of guys (IMO). I'll admit that my English is better than both of theirs but their English is a lot better than my Dutch! My intent was not to insult your English ability. The reason I pointed out your poor English was to demonstrate your lack of a profile, often a sign of a troll hiding behind their anonymity. You're the only one posting in this thread who doesn't have a profile. Don't you find that a bit odd?

Here's a bit of advice... Do some reading in these forums, especially Distributed Computing if it interests you. Many of the "hard core" DC members rarely venture to other sections of the Anandtech forum areas. Maybe that's why we're such a tight bunch and arguements are few and far between? Anyway, we all get along very well despite the fact that we're not all participating in the same project(s). The reason is instead of attacking each others projects or questioning the decisions to participate in them, we help each other and even donate CPU power to each other's projects when needed (during a race with another team).

Again, sorry if you took my post as an attack on your nationality. That was not my intent in any way.
 
One more thing Jevans, I do hope you get a chance to edit the title of the thread too and it is possible a Moderator may "lock" down the thread if the title isn't changed since it is technically not PC as it appears inflamatory etc, is that these people in here feel so strongly so that they literally saved my life. You may have only attacked the "Alien" project in here but I was personally attacked by the State of Georgia over another project called RC5. I'll spare the details but trust me, they saved my life.
 
Can someone please PM any information you have on ALS distributed computing? I'd switch to that in a heartbeat if I could. It has affected 3 people in my life and I'd devote whatever I could to help. Thanks.
