SETI 2 monitoring programs

One thing that has really bugged me about S@H2 since the end of classic is the lack of stats recording for the individual clients.
I only have a very vague idea of how fast my main rig crunches WUs (by looking in tasks,& only if I see the WU% at the right time) ,but their is no recording of these times 🙁 & I have no real idea of what my daily output is for my main rig, or any others for that matter.

On S@H classic ,as many people know SETIQ was brillant for this (as well as caching WUs) ,particularly for monitoring multiple clients.
For individual clients SETI Spy & others did a good job 🙂 (RIP Reolof

Well I finally got around to looking into this issue for BOINC (AFAIK no one else here has ,or they've kept quiet about it😛) & it turns out that some people did pick up the developement of SETI Spy for BOINC 🙂.

They released their 1st version of SETI Spy++ in Jan 2005! (so its now quite new😉) ,I've tried it but it doesn't seem to work ,it can't find the needed SETI files.Atm I'm guessing that newer versions of BOINC & SETI have broken compatibilty as SETISpy++ hasn't been updated in a long time 🙁
If you want to try it ,d/l from the above link & not from the BOINC site as their file is corrupted.LMK how you get on.

I also found a program called SETI@BOINCWatch which looked promising and was also very reminescent of SETISpy.
I tried S@Bwatch ,& whilst it did work for a while after pointing the program to the correct 'slots', it started to crash soon afterwards with multiple error messeges 🙁
So I'm back to square 1 atm ,could other people give this a try please?
Maybe you'll have better luck?

Would be cool if we can get one of these to work, & it would bring back a little more fun into SETI ,or maybe we could find another similiar program?🙂

Well, the BOINC add-ons has for a long time been listed at http://boinc.berkeley.edu/addons.php

The only one I've tested is BoincView The last version I've tested is v1.01, a quick look reveals it's still working, even haven't used it for some months. You can easily monitor/control many computers at once, and there should also be an option to create logs of your results.

BoincView has also some features the BOINC Manager does not have.

The negative is BoincView uses more cpu-resources and memory than BOINC Manager, and with multiple projects estimated cached work and so on often has no root in reality, since uses resource-share in the calculation... Example, BoincView claims one of my computers has currently got 11181838 days of cached work. 😛
There's also been some reports of BoincView leaking memory, not sure if this is fixed or not...

BTW, BOINC does include detailed work-info on the web-pages for each computer, but this is routinely purged to keep database manageable size.

*sigh* BOINC view fails to keep upto date with WU progress 🙁 ,I have to keep opening 'locations' & hitting applie to get it upto date.

Don't any of these work properly?

Isn't anyone else gonna give some of these a try & give some input?🙁

I have many of the same feelings. I used SETIGate for caching of my SETI classic WU's. Brilliant program. Was the sole reason for me being able to increase my WU load from 17 in my first month to close on 200 per day (on a dial-up connection). OK, I also increased the number of machines, but again, only because of SETIGate.

I have be using BOINC View (ver 1.2.5) for quite some time now. I like it. It still is not SETIGate, but OK. I was able to track all my machines states and built a huge Excel spread sheet with the stats (and learnt a lot about Excel in the process). Keeping those stats was also very timne consuming. Now I just crunch.

heh ,yea I tend to do more just crunching now ,partly because local stats are not so accessable.

Does BOINC view stay upto date with WU progress on your rigs?

Yes, it seems to stay fairly up to date. I uised SetiWatch to keep track of SETI classic stuff - had a nice green or reg robot thing. the turn around time or BOINC view seems to be quick. I must say that there are some features that are quite awkward to use on some I don't even bother with. But I like the estimate of the credits I will get and how long to go in on screen for 16 current WU's

Hope that answers your question.

Yip. same. I tried to have it do the access via the network to start, but that did not seem to work, so I just shared folders and got 'view' to look there.

Mine does it via direct file access.
I've only tried to use net-access... Using direct file-access can have the disadvantage to interfere with writing of client_state.xml...
Also, another advantage, by using net-access you can remotely control the BOINC-client, this won't work if you're using file-access...

Remember, to use net-access, you needs to add a remote_hosts.cfg to the BOINC-directory, this file should contain a computer-name or ip-address per line, of whatever computer you'll be monitoring from. You also needs to know the password in gui_rpc_auth.cfg, preferably edit to use your own password and not the random choosen by BOINC. 😉

Can you remotely connect the BOINC Manager to a different computer? If so, BoincView should also work...

BTW, BoincView also has a setting of how often it should update, if not mistaken the default is longer than BOINC Manager that now updates per second. Also, if you're using file-access, would guess how often is updated depends on the "Write to disk at most every N seconds"-preference. At default 60 seconds, BoincView can likely only update on the progress more than once per minute if you're using file-access...

Hmm, I'm using 10 minutes, and a quick test with v1.2.2 (haven't bothered to upgrade) reveals the client using file-access have been stuck for over 1 minute, while the client using net-access is updated roughly every 5 seconds...

I tried the net access but ti didn't work ,from what your saying its because I haven't setup remote hosts.cfg.
I've put in my SETI password.

BOINC view wasn't updating at all ,even though update was set at 4s

I'll try that cfg file & see if that fixes ,thanks🙂

[edit]
Tried it & it says 'Their seems to be no client on port xxxxx ,try anyway?' ,I've said yes but I don't know if it'll work.

Advanced - Select Computer...

For this to work, you must have configured remote_hosts.cfg and know the password in gui_rpc_auth.cfg
Oh, and re-start BOINC core client after doing any of the changes. 😉

Got ya🙂 ,yea remote access works.
I found the password you were refering to,that wasn't the one I'd been putting in.
Maybe BOINCView will work now?

[edit]Yep its refreshing now ,woohoo! 😀 ,now why can't they get it to work on direct file access too?? (I must remember to change that randomly generated BOINC password😉)

Thanks for your help RD🙂

Anyone else tried these programs?
