Set Speakers to 5.1 - Now AIM sounds are messed up...

Im running Vista Ultimate, using AIM 5.9 (this does it with the newest version as well). My speakers were in 2.1 mode, so I switched them to 5.1 like they are supose to be, and all sounds work fine, except for sounds in AIM. They are all muffled and make a cracking noise. I went directly to the files and played them via WMP and they play fine, just any sounds out of AIM are messed up. Any ideas? Thanks!
