In XP, I can select the deflaut OUTPUT deive for MIDI, but I dont see ow to set the default *input* MIDI device. I have an app that *needs* the default set..

What app please.
You may have to be patient for answers to midi questions these days. I used to have a lot of midi sites to check, but the links have mostly gone dead.

I believe your midi input only works (for hardware) if your sound card supports MPU 401 and you have the "joystick to midi" cables. I know the TBSC supports this.

For software purposes , their are programs that will simulate this and serve as a "bridge" to send midi between midi editors, but I never used them so I don't recall the name.

Try http://www.anvilstudio.com/ for a free (last I checked) midi editor and they may have more information for you too.
