in the chinese restaurant i goto for lunch, they have orange chicken, seseme chicken, general tso's chicken, and sweet and sour chicken.

it's easy for the restaurant since all these dishes use the same main ingrident. it's just the sauce thats different. but when i ordered seseme chicken and my friend ordered general tso's chicken, they looked the same except mines has seseme seeds.

No way! That's not the Ancient Chinese Secret! The secret has to do with Calgon laundry detergent :p

The way my dad makes it in his restaurant, they (General Tso's Chicken, Orange Chicken and Sesame Chicken) look pretty much the same.

there's this cheap chinese restaurant near work, and i would think this holds true at most places. the chicken base is all the same, its all in the sauce. deep fried dark meat in batter, with a slightly diff sauce. i usually get sesame chicken but to change it up i got orange chicken yesterday (which was too tangy, ick) so yeah its all the same. it keeps costs low and cooking time short and simple.

In theory, Tso's should be a hot dish, and sesame chicken should be salty.

However, American tastes are not quite so adapted to that sort of heat (people complain), so General Tso's chicken is usually pretty weak and stupid.

i talked to people about this, they are supposed to be different dishes...

Tso is suspposed to have chilli peppers by default... sesame chicken, sesame....

but on top of that, the chicken chunks are supposed to be different sized, between each dish, but i forgot if it was tso that was larger or sesame...

that having been said, many many many takeouts and restaurants, sadly, have watered themselves down in the sake of convenience, prep time savings, whatever.... and make both dishes the same, same sauce etc. the only difference would be sesame, or the chillis...

in such case, I order SPICEY Sesame Chicken, and I get both worlds...

I don't think the cooks really know the difference either. The difference between Orange/Tso's/Sesamie chicken is different in Chicago, West Lafayette, and Indianapolis it seems. Also, apparently in a lot of places in West Lafayette, Kung Pao Chicken = Orange Chicken /w nuts and spicy. Don't get me wrong, they are still cooked VERY well, but I think that the difference between the three is american in origin and the FOB cooks around here have no clue what the difference is.
