Services.msc frequently restarting?

I'm running windows xp pro and recently services.msc has been randomly restarting after most reboots. That is, certain necessary services I will set at automatic and then after the next time I turn the computer on the process will be disabled. This is getting very annoying especially with services like windows installer and shell hardware detection all of a sudden becoming disabled. I have purposely disabled most of the listings so I am thinking that may have something to do with it. Anyone have any ideas?

Let me guess, consulted some XP optimation site? Your post doesnt make alot of sense. Services.msc is an interface to the SCM. But your saying that a number of services themselves are having their settings changed? If that is indeed it, set all of them back to the install defaults and see if that resolves it.

Yes that is what I mean. I did consult such a site a while ago unfortunately, which said that these services leeched system resources. Will setting them all back to default bring a significant decrease in performance?

IMHO, no (but some people will swear up and down it will). I guess to be fair if your are extremely memory bound (e.g. <192meg) it may matter, if not, I say no (and as you've seen, it can cause issues)

Any service that is not being used is not using up any system resources so there is no need to disable any for performance reasons. The only time it is nessacerry is when getting rid of something annoying like Security Center.
