*For mods: If this is in someway an illegal post, or it is in the wrong section, please move/delete it, but explain why to me via PM. Thanks!

For those interested, I am offering a record-conversion service. I'll take your dated, semi-worthless record collection, and transform it into a new-fangled and useful CD library. The service works like this:

1) You contact me (matt@btank.com) With an approximation of your record collection (or how many records you want converted)

2) I give you a price estimate. My prices are not arbitrary, and I try to price fairly. Basically, prices start at $3.75 per album ($4.75 for double album) and work their way down by quantity, like this:

records --------- Price/per album
< 20 $3.75
> 20 $3.50
> 50 $3.25
> 75 $3.00

Normally for orders over 50, I will ask for a small percentage of the approximate price (%10 or so) up front, to help cover initial material costs.

3) Once a price has been agreed on, you can ship your records to me, and I'll begin.

Things to keep in mind:
1) All records have to be recorded in real time, so I can only really record 1 or 2 records an hour. So the size of your collection determines how quickly your order is filled.
2) recording quality varies by vinyl condition. If your records are warped, scratched, or moldy, odds are they won't sound pristine.
3) The vinyls are recorded as .wav files, spliced using Logic Platinum 6, and burned to CD using Toast Titanium 6 w/ Jam. No MP3's here!
4) What I've done in the past with finished CD's is labeled the CD itself (CD's are double sided blanks, with no factory writing or etching on them) with the Artist and Album name, using a marker made especially for CD labelling (fancy!). I then put each CD into a fullsized plastic CD jewel case, and slide a cover paper, with Artist and Album info typed, to the front.

Variations:
Discounts may be appropriate if:
1) You send me an external hard drive, and instead of burning cd's, I'll load them onto the drive, and send it back to you
2) You request CD "sleeves" instead of jewel cases.
3) Anything else you can think of.

Any questions, feel free to PM me, or email me at matt@btank.com

Thanks a lot.

Not everyone with a turntable and computer has hours of free time, the willingness to go through and edit each track out of a block of audio, or the know-how to do it right. Thanks

If you have vinyl, a turntable, and a computer and have the desire to convert your records to digital you are more then likely particular about your music and are not going to risk shipping vinyl TWO ways to a stranger just to get CDs back that don't even have postprocessing done to the audio to minimize the artifacts.

The process is easy. I have done it quite a bit. Getting the vinyl music in digital format on the HD is EASY and takes almost no time. It is the editing and pop/click/noise reduction that takes all the time and you are not even doing that part so that would have to be done by the perosn seeking your service....so they get to spend the majority of the time anyway, use another CD, and all the while risking their collection in transit.

I do not see you retiring on this business plan.

If you have a program that will record, and edit the audio, I'd like to see it. The only programs I've seen that come close to doing that use a technique that cuts tracks when input becomes lower than a set threshold, which butchers songs that have any kind of pause in them. I look at the recorded sound files, and pick apart the tracks manually, so they're always correct.

If you're done shitting on my thread, please feel free to move on. I've done this service before a bunch of times locally, with some success, so obviously it's worth it to some people. THANKS.

sorry for excessive bumps, but are only in reply to excessive craps

*I do edit pop/click/noise reductions to some degree, which is why I stated that I am using Logic Platinum.

Assuming you clean up the audio using quality software & codecs, outputted to a lossless format for ease of re-encoding later, this is not a bad idea. I don't think the mods will allow this here though -- probly belongs in FS/FT if that. They don't take kindly to people promoting their business

Closest thing I've seen that they allow is a guy who makes metal roses out of hard drive platters

Calm down guys. He's offering a service. If you don't want it or need it, then butt out. I agree that it can be done at home with a Powerbook, but how many people have the inclination to do it? Just don't bother giving your input. He can offer whatever he likes.

Also, you can make ceramic dishes and movies at home, so should the people who make them for money just stop? No.
