Service Packs in Windows

When applying service packs to Windows (2000Pro/Server & XP...), do you need apply them all in order or can you just go straight to SP4 after installing Windows 2000Pro fresh?

Just curious. I've always gone to the latest...

All MS Service Packs are cummulative, therefore you don't need to installl all SP...just install the most resent one.

Thanks guys. That's exactly what I though, but I wasn't sure of it...

Only thing I'll add is that you may need to reapply any hotfixes that are released after the service pack hit's code complete and before it actually ships. Most hotfixes are listed as pre-spX. So (for example) the new 2000 hotfixes are pre-sp5. Some of those may have come out before SP4 was released (confused yet 😉)

Not confused, but would those hotfixes come up on windowsupdate.com after installing the latest SP? If so, it's not a problem, because I always apply the critical patches...
Besides the SPs and the patches available at windowsupdate.com, are there any other updates that need to be applied to Windows?

Actually I know since at least SP2 of Win2k if you had hotfixes applied that were released after the SP the SP will not overwrite them. The MS installer will check all file versions before overwriting anything. I've not tried this with any other SPs before SP2 though.
