I downloaded the latest service pack for my mothers pc but everytime it tries it just ends up saying "some updates were not installed" without giving a reason. This is the administrator (and only) account on the machine. I'm also seeing NT kernel something eating up like 40% of her cpu after the fact. What could be going on?

Which one are you on? IIRC, you have to install SP1 before you can install SP2. Or just let Windows Update take care of it.

Sounds like the op is using WU. You should dl the stand alone sp1 and sp2 update files and try it that way.

Keep in mind MS will KILL your SYS-Prep for creating BackUp Images to New Hardware (Main Boards) if you install a SP UpDate.

I advise you to install your original Vista or Win7 OS (SP version is OK) without a SP UpDate then elect a fresh installation of Win10 in order to preserve a SYS-Prep BackUp Image for a New HardWare Image - Don't know if a fresh installation of Win10 has the SYS-Prep option for New Hardware? I've yet to test it.

Remember you always have to create a New Account on the 1st boot when Booting a SYS-Prep Image then Delete the account and Restore your Administrator Account and ReBoot to a your Full DeskTop.

Just a some advise to the OP of this thread as to the consequences when installing SP Packs as you will loose SYS-Prep and the ability to transfer your OS to New HardWare Vs your Windows Registration and Activation.
